Where Wilderness Becomes Wonder

There is a moment — deep inside the ancient canopy of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — when time simply stops. A silverback emerges from the undergrowth, settles just metres away, and holds your gaze. No fence. No glass. No distance. Just you, the forest, and the most magnificent creature on Earth.

Wander & Wonder Tours has crafted this 3-day gorilla trek to deliver exactly that moment, set within an experience of genuine comfort, expert guidance, and authentic connection to Uganda's extraordinary natural heritage.

UNESCO-listed Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to nearly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas. With fewer than 1,100 individuals surviving in the wild, spending time with these animals is a privilege shared by only a handful of people each day — and a memory that endures for a lifetime.

Our expert guides, deep local knowledge, and meticulous attention to detail ensure you experience Bwindi with full confidence — from arrival in Kampala to the moment you leave with a heart full of wonder.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Every detail is taken care of. Your only task is to be fully present.

01
Day One
Kampala to Bwindi — Into the Ancient Forest
Departure — Scenic Drive — Lodge Check-In

Your adventure begins early in Kampala where your private 4x4 vehicle and driver await. The road to Bwindi is itself a journey worth savouring — sweeping through Uganda's green hills, tea plantations, and the dramatic landscape of the Great Rift Valley escarpment.

En route, stop at the Equator for photographs and a brief cultural introduction to the communities surrounding Bwindi. Arrive at your forest lodge in the late afternoon for a warm welcome, an orientation briefing on tomorrow's trek, and a relaxed evening dinner overlooking the forest canopy.

Approx. 7–8 hour drive Equator stopover Dinner & overnight: Lodge Trek briefing & preparation
02
Day Two
The Trek — One Hour That Changes Everything
Gorilla Trekking — Cultural Visit — Celebration Dinner

Rise before dawn. After a hearty breakfast, you transfer to the Uganda Wildlife Authority park headquarters for a final briefing and assignment to a gorilla family. Your group of no more than 8 trekkers sets off into the forest with armed UWA rangers and your expert guide leading the way.

The trek through the impenetrable undergrowth can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours — the gorillas move freely and finding them is part of the adventure. When you do, you are granted a precious, permitted hour in the presence of the gorilla family: silverbacks, mothers nursing infants, playful juveniles rolling through the undergrowth. No photography restrictions. Just silence, wonder, and the extraordinary privilege of proximity.

Return to the lodge for a late lunch, followed by an optional community visit to a nearby Batwa pygmy cultural experience — a deeply moving encounter with the forest's original custodians.

Early start (06:00) Gorilla trekking permit 1 hour with gorilla family Batwa cultural experience (optional) Celebration dinner 2nd night: Lodge
03
Day Three
Forest Morning & Return to Kampala
Leisure Breakfast — Nature Walk (Optional) — Departure

Savour your final morning in the forest. After a relaxed breakfast with views over the valley, you may choose an optional guided nature walk through the forest edges — a perfect opportunity to spot forest birds, colobus monkeys, and perhaps the tracks left by elephants overnight.

Following checkout, your driver departs for Kampala with lunch en route at a recommended stopover. Arrive in Kampala in the early evening. Your guide is available to assist with onward transfers, hotel arrangements, or extending your Uganda experience with additional tour options.

"Our guide's knowledge of the gorillas and the forest was extraordinary. He pointed out individual gorillas by name, explained their behaviours, and made us feel completely safe and at ease throughout. Worth every dollar of the permit."

Everything You Need to Know

Gorilla trekking ranges from 30 minutes to 6 hours of hiking through dense forest terrain. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended — you should be able to walk for several hours on uneven ground. However, treks are led at a pace suited to the group, and porters are available to assist with bags and support less mobile trekkers. Age limit is 15 years minimum.
Bwindi can be visited year-round. The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer easier trekking conditions with firmer ground. The wet seasons bring lush vegetation and fewer tourist crowds — treks are still fully operational. We recommend booking 3–6 months in advance regardless of season, as gorilla permits sell out quickly.
Yes. The Uganda Wildlife Authority gorilla trekking permit (currently USD 700 per person) is fully included in all our 3-Day Bwindi Gorilla Trek packages. This permit covers your 1 hour in the presence of a designated gorilla family, accompanied by UWA ranger guides throughout the trek.
We recommend: sturdy waterproof hiking boots, long-sleeved shirts and trousers (green or neutral tones), a lightweight rain jacket, gardening-style gloves for pulling on vegetation, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, plenty of drinking water (provided), energy snacks, a good camera, and your sense of wonder. We provide a full packing list upon booking confirmation.
Gorilla trekking is safe and well-regulated by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. To protect the gorillas — who share 98% of our DNA and are susceptible to human illness — visitors must maintain a minimum distance of 7 metres, keep voices low, avoid flash photography, and not visit if unwell. Face masks were introduced post-COVID and may still be required. Your guide will brief you fully before the trek.
We strongly advise comprehensive travel insurance covering gorilla trekking activities and trek cancellations. The Uganda Wildlife Authority does not routinely refund permits in cases of illness or withdrawal, though permit transfers can sometimes be arranged. Our team will support you through any rebooking process and will always work in your best interest.
You can pay securely online via our PesaPal payment portal at store.pesapal.com/wanderandwonderlimited, which accepts major credit and debit cards. Alternatively, contact our team directly at bookings@wanderandwonderug.com to arrange a bank transfer, payment plan, or discuss deposit options. A confirmed booking requires a 30% deposit, with the balance due 60 days before arrival.
Absolutely. Uganda offers some of Africa's most diverse wildlife and landscapes. Popular additions to the Bwindi gorilla trek include chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, a big-5 safari at Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls boat cruise, and a relaxation extension at Lake Bunyonyi.
