Gorilla Trekking — The Encounter of a Lifetime

Rise early for a light breakfast before heading to the park headquarters for your gorilla permit check-in and a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. You will be assigned to a habituated gorilla family and set off into the ancient forest alongside experienced trackers who have spent years studying these animals. The trek can take anywhere from one to five hours depending on where the gorillas have made their morning nest. When you find them — and you will — you are permitted one golden hour in their presence. Silverbacks resting in shafts of forest light. Young gorillas tumbling through undergrowth. Mothers cradling infants with astonishing gentleness. It is, without question, one of the most moving wildlife experiences on earth. Return to the lodge for a celebratory lunch and afternoon at leisure.

Batwa Cultural Experience & Return Journey

This morning, walk alongside the Batwa people — the original forest-dwellers of Bwindi who lived inside the forest for thousands of years before it became a protected national park. Your Batwa guide will lead you through their ancestral forest, demonstrating traditional hunting techniques, honey collection from wild hives, medicinal plant knowledge, and storytelling around a fire. It is a humbling, deeply human experience that complements the wildlife encounter from the previous day. After lunch, begin the return journey toward Kampala, arriving in the evening for your final night in Uganda.

What Our Guests Say

Nothing tells our story better than the words of those who have walked the forest with us.

"

We have travelled extensively across Africa — Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda — but nothing, absolutely nothing, compares to looking into the eyes of a silverback gorilla just three metres away. Wander and Wonder arranged everything flawlessly. Samuel and the team were extraordinary.

I was travelling solo and was a little nervous. The team at Wander and Wonder made me feel completely looked after from my first email to landing back home. The gorilla experience was life-changing. I wept. I'm not ashamed to say it. This is a must-do before you leave this earth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you book.

How fit do I need to be to go gorilla trekking? +
Gorilla trekking is rated moderate difficulty. You do not need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness is helpful. Treks can involve steep, slippery terrain and may last anywhere from 1 to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are that day. Porters are available to carry your bag and assist you — we strongly recommend hiring one. Most travellers aged 15 to 75 complete the trek comfortably. If you have health concerns, please discuss them with us before booking.
What is the best time of year to go gorilla trekking in Uganda? +
Gorilla trekking is possible year-round in Uganda. The dry seasons — June to August and December to February — are generally considered the best time as trails are drier and easier to navigate. However, the forest is beautiful in every season, and the gorillas can always be found. The rainy seasons (March to May and October to November) offer fewer tourists and often lower accommodation rates, with the forest at its most lush and vibrant.
How far in advance should I book? +
We recommend booking at least 3 to 6 months in advance, especially for peak season travel (June–August and December). Uganda Wildlife Authority issues only 8 gorilla permits per gorilla family per day across the entire national park. These permits sell out extremely quickly. The moment you know your preferred dates, contact us to check permit availability and secure your booking with a deposit.
Do I need a visa to visit Uganda? +
Most nationalities require a tourist visa to enter Uganda. East African tourist visas cost approximately USD 50 and can be applied for online through the Uganda e-Visa portal before your travel. Some nationalities may apply on arrival. We will provide you with full visa guidance as part of your pre-trip briefing. East African visas also allow entry into Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
What vaccinations and health precautions do I need? +
Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry into Uganda and must be administered at least 10 days before departure. Anti-malarial medication is strongly recommended. We also advise being up to date on routine vaccinations (typhoid, hepatitis A and B, tetanus). Please consult your GP or a travel health clinic well in advance of your trip. A health screening is conducted before your gorilla trek — anyone showing symptoms of illness may be asked to sit out to protect the gorillas.
Can I extend this tour or customise it? +
Absolutely. This 5-day itinerary is a popular starting point, but we design all our safaris to be completely tailored. We can add chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, a game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park, white-water rafting on the Nile, or additional nights in Bwindi. We can also extend your trip into Rwanda to visit the gorillas there as a comparison experience. Contact us and we will design your dream itinerary.
What is your cancellation and refund policy? +
We understand that plans can change. Our standard policy: cancellations more than 60 days before departure receive a full refund minus the gorilla permit cost (which is non-refundable once purchased from Uganda Wildlife Authority). Cancellations 30–60 days before receive a 50% refund. Cancellations within 30 days are non-refundable. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers trip cancellation. We are always willing to work with you to reschedule to alternative dates wherever possible.
