Day-by-Day Plan
Your 3-Day Bwindi Journey
Every detail planned to give you the most extraordinary gorilla trekking experience in Uganda. Our expert local guides handle everything so you can be fully present.
Day One
Kampala / Entebbe → Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your Kampala or Entebbe hotel by your personal Wander and Wonder guide. Settle into a comfortable 4WD vehicle and set out on the scenic drive southwestward through rolling green hills, tea plantations, and the equator crossing — a great photo opportunity.
En route, enjoy a packed lunch stop at a viewpoint overlooking the Rift Valley, with breathtaking panoramas that will give you your first sense of Uganda's extraordinary natural beauty. As afternoon light softens, you'll descend into the Bwindi mist belt and arrive at your lodge in time for a welcome briefing, dinner, and a night of sleep before the trek of a lifetime.
Distance: Approximately 480km (8–9 hours including stops). Accommodation: Lodge near Bwindi National Park, Buhoma area.
Day Two
Bwindi Gorilla Trekking — The Main Event
Rise early for breakfast before reporting to the Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing point by 7:30 AM. Your ranger guide will introduce you to the gorilla family you will track today, their habits, territory, and the trekking rules designed to protect them and keep you safe.
Then you enter the forest. The Buhoma Sector of Bwindi is one of the most rewarding trekking zones — ancient trees draped in moss, birdsong filling the air, and the rich earthy scent of 25,000-year-old rainforest. Your experienced trackers and rangers will lead you to a habituated gorilla family. Treks typically last 2–7 hours depending on where the gorillas have moved.
When you find them, the world stops. Silverback males weighing up to 230kg rest just metres away. Mothers nurse infants. Young gorillas tumble and play. You have one precious hour — a moment many describe as the most profound wildlife experience of their lives. Your guide will capture photos and video if you wish.
Return to your lodge for a hot lunch, rest, and in the late afternoon, optional village walk or bird watching through the forest edges to spot Bwindi's remarkable 350+ bird species.
Day Three
Community Visit & Return to Kampala / Entebbe
After breakfast, enjoy an optional morning visit to the local Batwa community — the original forest dwellers of Bwindi — for cultural storytelling, traditional music, and insight into generations of life alongside gorillas. This deeply human experience adds powerful context to your wildlife encounter.
Receive your official Uganda Wildlife Authority gorilla trekking certificate — a treasured keepsake. Your guide will then begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe, arriving in the evening with memories that will last a lifetime.
Note: Guests continuing to Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale Chimpanzee Forest, or other Uganda destinations can be seamlessly transferred. Ask us about extension packages.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking?
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi involves walking through dense rainforest on uneven terrain for 2–7 hours. A reasonable level of fitness is helpful, but porters are available to assist with bags and provide physical support throughout the trek. People aged 15–75+ successfully complete this trek every day. We encourage you to discuss any health concerns with us before booking.
What is a gorilla trekking permit and why does it cost $700?
A Uganda Wildlife Authority gorilla permit grants you legal access to trek to and spend one hour with a habituated gorilla family. The $700 fee goes directly toward gorilla conservation, anti-poaching ranger salaries, and community benefit programs that make gorilla protection sustainable. This fee is non-negotiable and set by the Ugandan government. All our packages include this permit.
What happens if we don't find the gorillas?
Our success rate is 99%. Buhoma Sector gorilla families are well-habituated and our experienced trackers follow them daily. In the extremely rare event that gorillas cannot be found (due to exceptional weather), Uganda Wildlife Authority typically offers a complimentary permit for another day. We will coordinate this on your behalf at no additional guiding cost.
When is the best time to trek gorillas in Bwindi?
Gorilla trekking happens year-round in Uganda. The dry seasons (June–August and December–February) offer easier trekking conditions with less mud and rain. The wet seasons (March–May and September–November) are greener, less crowded, and some travellers prefer this atmospheric experience. Permits sell out months in advance during peak season — we recommend booking at least 3–6 months ahead.
Is it safe to travel to Uganda?
Yes. Uganda is one of East Africa's safest and most welcoming travel destinations. Bwindi and the gorilla trekking zones have excellent safety records. We provide continuous safety briefings, all treks are escorted by armed UWA rangers, and we maintain emergency communication throughout. We recommend comprehensive travel insurance for all international trips.
Can I customise this tour or add more destinations?
Absolutely. This 3-day trek is a standalone package but also works perfectly as part of a longer Uganda itinerary. Popular extensions include chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, white-water rafting on the Nile, and gorilla habituation experiences. Contact our team and we'll build your perfect Uganda journey.
What should I pack for the gorilla trek?
Long-sleeved shirts and long trousers (dark or neutral colours), sturdy waterproof hiking boots, lightweight rain jacket, garden or leather gloves for gripping vegetation, insect repellent, sunscreen, a small daypack, and a camera (no flash allowed during gorilla encounter). We send a detailed packing list on booking confirmation.
How do I pay and when is payment due?
A 30% deposit is required to secure your booking and gorilla permits. The balance is due 60 days before departure. We accept secure online payment via our payment portal (PesaPal). We also accept bank transfers — details provided on booking. Contact us if you have any questions about payment flexibility.
