There Are Treks —
Then There Is This

Most visitors to Uganda trek to see one gorilla family. They return home transformed — gorillas will do that to you. But imagine going deeper. Imagine rising before dawn on two separate mornings, entering two different sectors of the ancient Bwindi forest, and sitting in silence with two completely different gorilla families, each with its own dynamics, its own dominant silverback, its own story.

This is the 4-Day Double Gorilla Trek — crafted by Wander & Wonder Tours for the discerning traveller who doesn't just want to witness Africa, but to feel it in the marrow of their bones. Two permits. Two sectors. One extraordinary journey through the heart of "The Pearl of Africa."

Uganda's mountain gorillas share 98.3% of human DNA. When a silverback meets your eyes, the boundary between worlds dissolves. This is not a safari. This is a reckoning.

Your 4-Day Journey Through Bwindi

Day 01

Arrival in Kampala & Transfer to Bwindi

Entebbe / Kampala → Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Your Wander & Wonder representative meets you at Entebbe International Airport. After a warm welcome and briefing, you set off in your private 4WD vehicle on the scenic drive south-west toward one of the last ancient rainforests on earth.

The journey takes you through Uganda's dramatic equatorial landscape — rolling tea estates, banana plantations, and the misty hills of Kigezi. Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon. Settle in, take in the forest views, and enjoy a welcome dinner as your guide walks you through tomorrow's trek briefing.

Day 02

First Gorilla Trek — Sector One

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park — Sector A

Rise before dawn. After an early breakfast, you reach the Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing point where experienced rangers assign you to your gorilla family group. With your permit in hand — one of only eight issued for this family today — you enter the forest.

The trek through Bwindi's dense undergrowth typically takes one to six hours depending on where the gorillas have moved overnight. When you find them, the world stops. You spend a full, unhurried one hour with the gorilla family — watching mothers nurse infants, juveniles tumble and play, the silverback move through his domain with calm, ancient authority. Return to the lodge for a celebratory lunch, afternoon rest, and time to absorb what you have witnessed.

Day 03

Transfer & Second Gorilla Trek — Sector Two

Bwindi — Sector A → Sector B (e.g. Rushaga / Nkuringo / Ruhija)

This is what separates a double trek from every other gorilla experience. After breakfast, you transfer to a second, completely different sector of Bwindi — a different entry point, different terrain, different rangers, and most crucially, a different gorilla family entirely.

Each sector of Bwindi is home to families with unique histories. Some are more habituated, some have larger groups, some have been studied by researchers for decades. Your guide will share the story of today's family as you trek through new forest, new canopy, new silence. A second one-hour encounter awaits. By evening, as you reflect over dinner, you will have shared time with two gorilla families — something most travellers never accomplish in a lifetime of African travel.

Day 04

Return Journey & Departure

Bwindi → Kampala / Entebbe

After a leisurely final breakfast and check-out, your driver-guide escorts you back to Kampala or Entebbe for your onward journey. Along the way, there are optional stops at the equator monument, local craft markets, or Lake Mburo National Park for a game drive (available on request as an extension).

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport in time for your evening flight, carrying with you two extraordinary encounters — and the knowledge that you have been part of something rare, real, and irreplaceable.

Words From People Who Were There

★★★★★

"We chose Wander & Wonder specifically for the double trek. Meeting two completely different gorilla families in two days was beyond anything we imagined. Samuel and the team handled everything flawlessly. The second family we encountered had a young silverback who walked within two metres of us. My wife was in tears. I was too."

James & Helen T.

United Kingdom — March 2025

★★★★★

"The logistics of two sectors could have been complicated but the team made it seamless. Our guide Fassie had encyclopedic knowledge of both families — their histories, individual personalities, even the infants' names. This is not a tour company, it's a family that loves Uganda. Book with them."

Claudine M.

Canada — July 2024

★★★★★

"I have done safaris across East Africa for 20 years. The double gorilla trek with Wander & Wonder is the finest single experience I have had on this continent. Every detail was considered. The accommodation, the food, the transfers, the rangers — exceptional. I will return."

Everything You Need to Know

How physically demanding is gorilla trekking?
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi involves hiking through dense rainforest on steep, often muddy terrain. Treks can last anywhere from one to eight hours depending on the gorillas' location that day. You do not need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Rangers accommodate all paces and porters are available to carry your bag and assist on difficult sections (approx. $15–$20, warmly recommended).
What is the gorilla trekking permit cost and what does it include?
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) gorilla trekking permit costs $800 USD per person per trek. This includes your official permit, the services of a trained UWA ranger and tracker, and your guaranteed one full hour with the gorilla family. Your 4-Day Double Gorilla Trek includes two permits ($1,600 total per person). Permits are non-refundable and non-transferable once issued.
What are the two sectors visited on this trip?
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is divided into four main sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Each sector has different habituated gorilla families and different forest terrain. On your double trek, Wander & Wonder pairs two sectors to maximise your experience and to ensure the gorilla families you encounter are genuinely different groups. The exact sectors are confirmed at booking based on permit availability.
Is gorilla trekking safe?
Yes. All habituated gorilla families in Bwindi have been studied and observed by researchers and rangers for decades. Strict protocols are followed: a maximum of eight visitors per family per day, a minimum distance of seven metres, no flash photography, and no trekking if you have a cold, flu, or infectious illness (gorillas share human DNA and are susceptible to our diseases). Your UWA ranger guides ensure a safe and respectful experience at all times.
What is the best time of year to visit?
Gorilla trekking is available year-round in Uganda. The most popular periods are the dry seasons: June to September and December to February. During these months the trails are less muddy and forest conditions are slightly easier. The rainy seasons (March to May and October to November) offer lower prices, lush green forest, and fewer tourists — many experienced travellers prefer them. Gorillas are always present regardless of season.
Can this itinerary be customised or extended?
Absolutely. Wander & Wonder Tours specialises in tailor-made Uganda safaris. The 4-Day Double Gorilla Trek can be extended with chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, wildlife safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park, a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, or a game drive in Lake Mburo National Park. Contact us to build your ideal Uganda itinerary.
Do I need a visa to visit Uganda?
Most nationalities require a tourist visa to enter Uganda. As of 2025, Uganda offers e-visas that can be applied for online before travel at visas.immigration.go.ug. The standard tourist visa costs approximately $50 USD. East African Tourist Visa holders can also visit Kenya and Rwanda on a single visa. Our team provides full pre-departure guidance including visa process, vaccination requirements, and packing recommendations.
How do I book and what is the payment process?
You can book by completing the inquiry form on this page or by contacting us directly via email or WhatsApp. Once availability is confirmed and your preferred dates are agreed, a deposit is required to secure your gorilla permits. You can pay securely online via our PesaPal payment link. We recommend booking at least three to six months in advance for peak season dates.
