Your Journey

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Every day has been thoughtfully crafted for maximum immersion — into the wild, into Ugandan culture, and into the raw, unhurried wonder of the Pearl of Africa.

Day 01

Arrival in Kampala — Welcome to the Pearl of Africa

Your private driver will meet you at Entebbe International Airport with a personalised welcome sign. After a warm greeting and refreshments, you'll be transferred in a luxury 4x4 to your hotel in Kampala. Your dedicated guide will join you for a welcome dinner briefing, explaining the gorilla trek preparation, packing tips, and what to expect over the coming days.

If time allows, enjoy an evening stroll along the shores of Lake Victoria or browse the craft markets at Nakasero.

Day 02

Kampala to Bwindi — Driving Through the Heart of Uganda

Rise early for a hearty breakfast before your private vehicle departs for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — a journey of approximately 8 to 9 hours through the dramatic landscapes of western Uganda. You'll pass through the rolling tea plantations of Kabale and the terraced hills of Kisoro, with your guide pointing out points of interest and local history along the way.

A scenic stop at the Equator in Kayabwe offers a perfect photo moment. Arrive at your luxury lodge in the afternoon, check in, and enjoy a relaxing evening overlooking the forested hills of Bwindi.

Day 03

Gorilla Trekking — The Encounter of a Lifetime

This is the day. After an early breakfast, your ranger guide will deliver a comprehensive pre-trek briefing at the UWA headquarters. You'll receive your trekking assignment for your designated gorilla family — then venture into one of Africa's most ancient and magical forests.

The trek can take anywhere from 1 to 5 hours depending on where the gorilla family is located. Once found, you are granted one magical, unhurried hour in their presence — watching them play, forage, and socialise just metres away. Our experienced guides ensure your safety and provide rich commentary on gorilla behaviour and the forest ecosystem.

Return to the lodge for a celebratory lunch, followed by an optional afternoon community village walk to meet local Batwa pygmies and learn about their relationship with the forest.

Day 04

Bwindi Exploration — Forest Hikes, Birds & Culture

Today is yours to explore Bwindi at your own pace. Choose from a guided nature walk inside the forest to spot rare birds including the African Green Broadbill and numerous sunbirds, or opt for a guided waterfall hike through the ancient jungle. Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to over 350 species of birds — a paradise for naturalists and photographers alike.

The afternoon is dedicated to your choice of a cultural experience with the local Buhoma community, watching traditional Bakiga dance performances, or simply relaxing at the lodge with views across the impenetrable canopy.

Day 05

Return to Entebbe — Farewell to Africa's Green Heart

After a final memorable breakfast with views of the mist-covered forest, it is time to begin the journey home. Your private vehicle will transfer you back to Entebbe or Kampala, with stops as you wish along the way. Your guide will be with you to the very end — seeing you off at the airport with warm farewells and memories that will last a lifetime.

We recommend a late-afternoon or evening departure to make the most of your final Ugandan morning. If you are extending your stay, we can arrange additional nights in Kampala, Entebbe, or connect you to a Queen Elizabeth National Park wildlife extension.

Your Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

The gorilla trek can range from a gentle 30-minute walk to a strenuous 3 to 5 hour hike through dense jungle terrain. The Uganda Wildlife Authority assigns you to a gorilla family based on your fitness level — so the trek is always manageable. We recommend being in reasonable health and wearing good hiking boots. Porters are available to hire on the day for a small fee. We also advise travellers with medical conditions to consult their doctor before travelling.

We strongly recommend booking at least 3 to 6 months in advance — and up to 12 months ahead for peak season travel (July–September and December–February). Uganda issues only 8 permits per gorilla family per day. Once permits are gone, they are gone. Contact us immediately to check availability for your preferred travel dates.

Yes — we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical evacuation and trip cancellation cover. Uganda's gorilla trekking takes place in remote forest environments. In the event of any unforeseen medical issue, evacuation can be costly without insurance. We are happy to recommend insurance providers if needed.

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round in Uganda. However, the dry seasons of June to September and December to February are considered best — trails are drier, vegetation is less dense, and gorillas are generally easier to locate. The green season (March–May, October–November) sees fewer tourists, lush scenery, and discounted lodge rates — a great option for those who do not mind some mud.

Yes. Uganda's gorilla trekking is one of the world's safest wildlife encounters. You are accompanied at all times by armed Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and experienced guides who know the gorilla families intimately. The gorillas are fully habituated to human presence — they will not charge or harm you when you follow the guidelines. Our 100% safety record speaks for itself.

Yes. A 30% deposit is required to secure your booking and gorilla permit. The remaining balance is due 60 days before departure. For cancellations made more than 60 days before departure, we refund the full amount minus the gorilla permit cost (USD 700 per person, as this is non-refundable from the Uganda Wildlife Authority). For cancellations within 60 days, we work with you to reschedule where possible. Full terms are provided in your booking confirmation.

Absolutely. Many guests combine the gorilla safari with chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, a Big Five game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park, a Nile boat cruise and rhino tracking at Murchison Falls, or a relaxing Nile retreat in Jinja. We can design a customised multi-destination Uganda itinerary to suit your interests, budget, and timeline. Just speak to Brian, our Tour Consultant.
