Two Primates.
One Unforgettable Journey.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits at the heart of the Virunga volcanic mountains — one of Africa's most dramatic landscapes. Here, fewer tourists and smaller trekking groups mean a genuinely intimate encounter with mountain gorillas and the rare golden monkey. This is not a tourist checkpoint. This is wild Africa.

  • Mountain Gorilla Trek Spend one full hour with a habituated gorilla family in their natural volcanic habitat. Witness silverbacks, playful juveniles, and nurturing mothers at close range.
  • Golden Monkey Tracking Track the endangered golden monkey through Mgahinga's ancient bamboo forests — a species found only in this Albertine Rift region of Africa.
  • Virunga Volcanic Landscapes Trek through terraced farmland, dense montane forest, and lava flows beneath three majestic volcanoes: Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabinyo.
  • Expert Local Guidance Your trek is led by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and our specialist guides — people who have spent years in these forests and whose stories bring every trail to life.

Your 3-Day Journey Through Mgahinga

Every day is carefully designed to immerse you fully — from your first glimpse of the Virunga volcanoes to your last sunset over the forest canopy.

01
Day One

Arrival in Kisoro & Golden Monkey Tracking

Your journey begins with a scenic transfer from Kampala or Entebbe to Kisoro — a drive of approximately 8–9 hours through Uganda's rolling hills, tea estates, and the dramatic southwest. Upon arrival at your lodge, you will be welcomed with a warm briefing by your Wander and Wonder guide before heading out for an afternoon golden monkey tracking session.

The golden monkey — found only in the Albertine Rift — inhabits Mgahinga's dense bamboo zone. Watching them leap between bamboo stalks, their brilliant orange-gold patches flashing against the green, is a genuinely magical introduction to this park. After tracking, return to your lodge for dinner under the shadow of the Virunga volcanoes.

Day Two

Gorilla Trekking — The Main Event

This is the day everything has been building toward. After an early breakfast, your guide will transfer you to the Mgahinga park headquarters for the official trek briefing at 7:30 AM — an important session where UWA rangers explain how to behave in the presence of gorillas, what to expect, and how to protect both yourself and the animals.

Then the trek begins. Depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight, trekking time can range from 1 to 6 hours through montane forest, bamboo, and lava fields. When you find them — and you will — you spend one full, unhurried hour with the family. Silverbacks weighing over 200kg. Mothers nursing infants. Juveniles tumbling playfully through the undergrowth. Photography is permitted; direct flash is not. This hour has a way of changing people.

After descending, return to your lodge for a hot lunch and an afternoon of rest or optional cultural village visits. Dinner that evening tends to be quieter, more reflective — that is the effect gorillas have.

Day Three

Morning Walk & Return to Kampala / Entebbe

Your final morning in Mgahinga is yours to savour. Enjoy a full breakfast with views of the Virunga volcanoes, then an optional short nature walk in the park buffer zone — a quieter, meditative way to close your time in this extraordinary landscape. Your guide may point out endemic birds, medicinal plants used by local communities, or simply find a viewpoint worth photographing.

Check out after breakfast and begin the return drive toward Kampala or Entebbe. En route, there is an opportunity to stop at the equator, Lake Mburo, or local craft markets — your guide will tailor the return based on your interests. You arrive in Kampala or Entebbe in the early evening, carrying memories that will last a lifetime.

"We have travelled extensively in Africa over 30 years, and standing 3 metres from a silverback gorilla in Mgahinga is the single most moving wildlife encounter of our lives. The Wander and Wonder team handled every detail perfectly. Brian our guide was exceptional — knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely passionate about conservation."

"I booked solo and was genuinely nervous about travelling alone in Uganda. From my first message to Samuel in the UK office to the final drive back, I felt safe, cared for, and in completely capable hands. The gorillas were beyond words. The golden monkey tracking on day one was a beautiful surprise I had not expected to love so much."

"We chose Mgahinga over Bwindi specifically for the smaller group sizes — and Wander and Wonder made that choice easy. The entire 3 days felt deeply personal, never commercial. The lodge was spectacular, the food was excellent, and the gorilla hour... we have watched our footage every week since we got home."

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking your Mgahinga gorilla trek.

Yes. Uganda Wildlife Authority and Wander and Wonder Tours guarantee a gorilla sighting on your permitted trek. In the extremely rare case that gorillas cannot be located after a full-day effort, your permit will be rescheduled or refunded per UWA policy. In practice, our guests have a 100% sighting record.
Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga is rated moderate. Treks can last between 1 and 6 hours depending on where the gorilla family is located that day. The terrain includes steep slopes, muddy trails, and bamboo thickets. Good fitness is helpful but trekkers of varied fitness levels complete it successfully. We strongly recommend hiring a porter ($15/day) — they carry your bag and provide physical support on steep terrain, while also directly supporting local employment.
Gorilla trekking is possible year-round. The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer the most comfortable conditions underfoot, with clearer skies and firmer trails. The green season (March–May and October–November) brings lush scenery and fewer crowds, with a slight increase in mud. We advise booking permits 3–6 months in advance regardless of season.
We recommend: waterproof hiking boots (ankle support is essential), long-sleeved shirts and long trousers in neutral colours, a waterproof jacket or poncho, gardening gloves to grip vegetation, a small daypack, insect repellent, sunscreen, energy snacks, at least 2 litres of water, and your camera (no flash). A full packing list is provided upon confirmation of your booking.
Yes. Most nationalities require a Uganda tourist visa, which can be obtained online via the Uganda e-visa portal (evisa.go.ug) or on arrival at Entebbe International Airport. The standard single-entry visa costs approximately $50 USD. We recommend applying online in advance. We are happy to advise on visa requirements specific to your nationality.
Both parks are safe, UWA-managed, and offer outstanding gorilla encounters. Mgahinga is smaller, quieter, and offers the rare bonus of golden monkey tracking. It has only one habituated gorilla group (Nyakagezi), meaning smaller trekking groups and a more intimate experience. Bwindi has more gorilla families and is larger. We recommend Mgahinga for travellers wanting a quieter, dual-primate experience, and Bwindi for those wanting the widest permit availability. We offer both.
Absolutely — and many guests do. Popular combinations include adding Queen Elizabeth National Park (tree-climbing lions, hippos, chimpanzee tracking), Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (second gorilla trek), or Murchison Falls (Nile boat safari, elephants, giraffes). Our team can build a seamless itinerary of any length. Contact us to discuss.
You can pay securely via our PesaPal payment link, which accepts major debit and credit cards, mobile money, and bank transfer. We require a deposit to hold your gorilla permit, with the balance due 60 days before departure. Upon payment, we issue a full booking confirmation and begin permit procurement immediately. For group bookings or bespoke itineraries, contact us directly to discuss payment schedules.
