Three Days in the Heart of Bwindi

Every hour of this journey has been thoughtfully designed — from your comfortable transfer south to the forest, through your gorilla encounter, and back again carrying memories that last a lifetime.

01
Day One
Kampala / Kigali to Rushaga

The Journey South — Arrival at the Forest Edge

Your adventure begins early. Your Wander and Wonder guide collects you from your hotel in Kampala or the border town of Katuna (if arriving from Kigali). The scenic drive south winds through Uganda's rolling hills, terraced farmland, and equatorial countryside — a landscape of extraordinary beauty.

By late afternoon you arrive at Rushaga, where the great dark wall of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest rises before you. Check in to your lodge, enjoy a welcome dinner around the fire, and receive a full briefing on tomorrow's trek — what to expect, how to behave with the gorillas, and what this encounter may feel like.

  • Early morning pick-up from Kampala hotel or Katuna border
  • Scenic 8-hour drive through Southwest Uganda
  • En-route stopovers for lunch and refreshments
  • Check-in and forest orientation at Rushaga
  • Welcome dinner and pre-trek gorilla briefing

02
Day Two
The Gorilla Trek — Rushaga Sector

Face-to-Face with Mountain Gorillas

This is the day. Rise before dawn for an early breakfast, then transfer to the Rushaga ranger station by 8:00 AM for park registration. Your expert UWA ranger-guide introduces the gorilla family you will track — one of several habituated groups in this sector, which may include Bikingi, Mishaya, Bweza, Kahungye or Nshongi families.

The trek through Bwindi's dense forest is an adventure in itself — climbing vines, mossy trails, ancient trees. Then the moment arrives. Your guide parts the undergrowth and the gorillas are simply there, enormous and peaceful, carrying infants, feeding, playing. You have one full hour with the family. Time stops. Words become inadequate.

Return to the lodge for a celebratory lunch, then spend the afternoon relaxing or taking an optional community village walk to meet local Batwa forest people.

  • Early breakfast and transfer to Rushaga UWA ranger station
  • Park briefing with your assigned ranger-guide
  • Gorilla trekking (2 to 6 hours depending on gorilla location)
  • One full hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family
  • Gorilla trekking certificate presented by UWA rangers
  • Optional afternoon community walk (Batwa cultural experience)

Day Three
Return — Kampala / Kigali

The Journey Home — Carrying the Memory

After a leisurely breakfast and a final moment to absorb the forest sounds, check out from your lodge and begin the return drive north to Kampala, or east to Kigali. Your guide ensures a comfortable journey, with stopovers for lunch and photo opportunities along the Ugandan countryside.

Drop-off at your Kampala hotel or Entebbe International Airport is timed to your onward flight. For guests continuing to other Uganda destinations — Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale Forest, or Lake Mburo — your Wander and Wonder team handles seamless arrangements.

  • Leisurely breakfast at the lodge
  • Checkout and scenic return drive to Kampala or Kigali
  • En-route lunch stop and final views of Southwest Uganda
  • Drop-off at Kampala hotel or Entebbe Airport (evening)
  • Option to extend with Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, or Lake Mburo

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking your gorilla trek with Wander and Wonder Tours.

Gorilla trekking is available year-round at Rushaga sector. The dry seasons — June to August and December to February — offer easier trekking conditions with firmer trails. The wet seasons (March to May, September to November) bring lush, atmospheric forest and fewer tourists, though trails can be muddy. Gorillas are present and visible in all seasons.
The Rushaga sector trek is rated moderate to challenging. Bwindi is a genuine tropical forest with steep terrain, dense undergrowth, and high altitude (1,160 to 2,607 metres). Treks can last 2 to 8 hours depending on where the gorillas are resting that day. Reasonably fit adults with no serious joint conditions can complete it. Porters are available for an additional cost and are strongly recommended for those who want support on the trail.
Yes. All Wander and Wonder gorilla trek packages include the official Uganda Wildlife Authority gorilla trekking permit (currently USD 800 per person per trek). This permit is non-refundable once purchased from UWA, so we recommend travel insurance that covers trek cancellation.
Mountain gorilla encounters have a very high success rate — over 95% — because the gorillas in Rushaga are fully habituated and tracked by rangers daily. In the extremely rare event that gorillas cannot be located (usually due to severe weather), UWA will reschedule your trek to another day at no additional permit cost.
Absolutely. Kigali is only 4 to 5 hours from the Rushaga sector via Katuna/Cyanika border crossing, making it an ideal gateway. Many of our guests combine a Rwanda and Uganda gorilla safari, entering through one country and exiting through the other. Our team handles cross-border logistics seamlessly.
We recommend: sturdy waterproof hiking boots (worn-in), long-sleeved shirt and long trousers (dark green or khaki), light waterproof jacket or poncho, thick gardening-style gloves to handle vegetation, a light daypack, insect repellent, sunscreen, camera with no flash, and a water bottle. A full detailed packing list is sent after booking.
A 30% non-refundable deposit confirms your booking and secures your gorilla permit. The balance is due 60 days before your tour departure. We accept payments via our secure online payment gateway at store.pesapal.com/wanderandwonderlimited, bank transfer, or credit/debit card. Contact us directly on WhatsApp or email to initiate your booking.
Yes — this is one of our most popular extensions. The 3-day Rushaga trek can be combined with chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, a boat safari on the Kazinga Channel, birding at Lake Mburo, or a Kampala city experience. We design bespoke itineraries for every traveller. Contact our team to discuss your vision.
