Mgahinga Gorilla National Park · South-west Uganda
Three days and two nights in the Virunga mountains. Track the golden monkeys through bamboo, walk with the Batwa, and climb a volcano above the mist.
Itinerary ref WWT-MGH-3D · Wander and Wonder Tours
Tour overview
Mgahinga is where Uganda touches the roof of the Virunga range. Three dormant volcanoes rise from a park of only about 34 square kilometres, and the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo runs along their shoulders.
Most people head for Bwindi. You are choosing the quiet side of the mountains. Mornings begin in cold bamboo forest with a troop of endangered golden monkeys, a species found only in this range. By afternoon you are sitting with Batwa guides, the first forest people of this region, learning how they lived here. On the last morning you climb Mount Gahinga, and the clouds are below you.
Your driver-guide handles every border form, every permit and every road. All you carry is a day pack and a camera.
Follow a troop of gold-and-black monkeys through bamboo with a ranger. A rare, quiet encounter in a park few visitors reach.
Walk the forest with Batwa guides. Hear the stories, see how they hunted and gathered, and take in the sound of their songs.
A full morning climb through bamboo and giant lobelia to a crater lake and a view across three countries.
Glide across the lake in a dugout canoe with the volcanoes behind you. The ideal first evening after the road.
Day-by-day programme
Times are realistic for road, border and trail. Your driver-guide adjusts them to weather and the pace of your group.
Kigali to Kisoro · Lake Mutanda
The day starts in the hum of Kigali and ends in silence. Within an hour the city thins into terraced hills, each one cut into green steps by hand. Then, past Musanze, the volcanoes appear and do not leave you. They sit on the horizon like three people waiting for you to arrive.
You cross into Uganda at Cyanika, a small and friendly border where your driver-guide handles the paperwork. By lunchtime you are in Kisoro, a highland town with the air of a place at the edge of the map.
Late afternoon on Lake Mutanda. Your canoeist stops paddling, the water goes still, and the volcanoes turn gold and then violet.
Overnight: Kisoro and Lake Mutanda area, in your chosen tier.
Golden monkey tracking · Batwa Trail
You wake in the cold, wrap your hands around hot tea, and head to Ntebeko gate. Rangers give a short briefing, and then you walk into a forest of bamboo that rattles and whispers in the wind.
The golden monkeys are easy to hear before they are seen. Branches shake, and a flash of orange-gold fur crosses the green. Then the whole troop is around you, feeding, grooming and watching you right back. When your hour with them ends, nobody wants to leave.
After lunch, the Batwa take over. They are the original people of these forests, and their guides lead you along old hunting paths with stories that have never been written down.
The first time the troop notices you. A young monkey stops mid-leap, looks straight at you, and carries on as if you belong there.
Overnight: Kisoro and Lake Mutanda area, in your chosen tier.
Mount Gahinga hike · Return to Kigali
The final morning is the big one. A ranger with a rifle leads the way, because buffalo and elephant sometimes share the slopes. The path climbs steadily through bamboo, then through a strange, ancient forest of giant lobelia and moss.
At the top there is a small crater swamp, and beyond it a view over three countries. The clouds sit below you like a second landscape. Muhabura and Sabinyo stand beside you, and there is nothing to do but breathe.
You descend, eat a late lunch from your pack, and begin the road back to Kigali with a camera full of gold and green.
The summit crater, where the wind drops for a few seconds and the whole range goes quiet.
Prefer gorillas over the hike? Swap Day 3 for a Mgahinga gorilla trek using the add-on in the price section. Gorilla groups move between Uganda, Rwanda and Congo, so we confirm availability when you book.
Activities and experiences
Park permit and ranger are included. Duration depends on where the troop is feeding. Expect 2 to 4 hours in total, mostly on gentle forest tracks.
A community-led cultural walk. Visits support Batwa families directly. A good fit for all ages and fitness levels.
The most rewarding walk in the park. Steady uphill for several hours. Walking poles help on the way down.
A relaxed sunset paddle with a local canoeist. Life jackets provided. Perfect after a day on the road.
Replace the hike with an encounter with a mountain gorilla family. A permit is required and is the largest single cost in the upgrade.

Safety information
Rangers accompany every walk because buffalo and elephant can use the forest paths. Follow their instructions.
Stay as far from the animals as your ranger says. Never feed them and do not use flash photography.
Speak to a travel clinic about malaria and vaccines. If you are ill with a cold or stomach bug, tell us. Wildlife can catch human illness.
