Tour overview

One trek is a gift. Two is a story.

The Double Gorilla Trek gives you two permits and two days of trekking, in two different sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. You meet a different family each time, in different forest, with a different character.

Rushaga offers variety and a choice of families. Nkuringo is steeper and more dramatic. Together they give photographers and keen wildlife lovers a second chance, a second family and a second set of memories.

The story of your trip

Three moments you will carry home

FAMILY ONE

The gentle introduction

Rushaga is where many travellers first meet gorillas. You learn the rhythm of the forest, the hush before the trackers speak and the first look at a family.

THE ROAD BETWEEN

A changing landscape

The afternoon transfer climbs through terraced hills and valleys, past villages and fields, toward the steep green slopes of Nkuringo.

FAMILY TWO

Steeper, wilder, different

Nkuringo asks more of your legs and gives more in return. A second family, a second hour and a sense of how varied Bwindi really is.

Day by day programme

Your four days in Uganda

DAY 1

The road south

Entebbe or Kampala to Rushaga

The hills climb and the air cools. By dusk you are at the forest edge, with two gorilla families ahead of you.

  • 06:30Pick up at Entebbe airport or your Kampala hotel. Meet your driver guide.
  • 09:00Photo stop at the Equator crossing.
  • 12:00Lunch break in Mbarara.
  • 14:30Drive through Kabale and the Kigezi hills.
  • 17:30Arrive at your lodge near Rushaga and do a gear check.
  • 19:00Dinner and an early night.
The drive takes about 9 to 10 hours with stops. An early start keeps it comfortable.
DAY 2

First family, Rushaga

Trek one, then on to Nkuringo

Rushaga has many gorilla families, so your trackers match you with one that suits your pace. Then the road climbs to Nkuringo.

  • 06:30Breakfast and packed lunch.
  • 07:30Briefing at the Rushaga trailhead. Your first family is assigned.
  • 08:00Walk into the forest with a ranger and trackers, from 1 to 7 hours.
  • MiddayYour full hour with the first gorilla family.
  • 15:00Transfer to Nkuringo, about 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • 17:30Arrive at your Nkuringo lodge and rest.
  • 19:30Dinner.
Trek length varies, so the transfer time moves with the gorillas. A porter is recommended.
DAY 3

Second family, Nkuringo

Trek two on steeper ground

Nkuringo is dramatic and steep, with wide views over the valleys. A different sector, a different family, a different story.

  • 06:30Breakfast and packed lunch.
  • 07:30Briefing at the Nkuringo trailhead. Your second family is assigned.
  • 08:00Walk into the forest with a ranger and trackers.
  • MiddayYour full hour with the second gorilla family.
  • AfternoonReturn to the lodge. Enjoy views toward the Virunga volcanoes on clear days.
  • 19:30Farewell dinner.
Nkuringo terrain is steeper than most sectors, so good fitness and a porter are strongly advised.
DAY 4

Hills and home

Nkuringo to Entebbe or Kampala

One last look at the green valleys, and a long drive home with two gorilla stories to tell.

  • 07:30Breakfast.
  • 08:30Depart Nkuringo.
  • 10:30Optional stop at a Lake Bunyonyi viewpoint, about 30 minutes.
