Why this safari

Four reasons Lake Mburo wins hearts

Lake Mburo is the quiet gem of Uganda's safari circuit: compact, golden and wonderfully alive. It is the only park in the country where you will meet the russet impala, and one of the few where you can explore on foot.

Walk the savannah

A sunrise walking safari with an armed ranger, close to zebras, impalas, elands and topi.

Cruise the lake

A quiet boat ride past hippos, crocodiles, fish eagles and shy water birds along the papyrus.

Stand on the equator

A photo stop on the line that splits the world in two, on the road to the park.

Birds in every colour

More than 300 bird species, from the papyrus gonolek to the elusive African finfoot.

Day1

Across the Equator and Onto the Lake

Drive 4.5 to 5 hoursBoat cruise about 2 hours

Your driver-guide meets you at your hotel in the early morning and the city falls away behind you. The highway rolls south west through Mpigi and Masaka, past banana groves and roadside fruit stalls, until a painted line on the tarmac announces that you are standing on the equator, one foot in each hemisphere.

By early afternoon the land turns to savannah and you pass through the gate of Lake Mburo National Park, where the first zebras and impalas often watch you arrive. After lunch, you board a boat on the lake. Hippos surface with a snort, crocodiles slide off the banks and fish eagles call from the treetops. As the sun lowers, the water turns to copper and the whole park seems to exhale.

  • Early morning pick-up in Kampala or Entebbe, with an equator photo stop and lunch break
  • Arrival at Lake Mburo National Park and lodge check-in
  • Afternoon boat cruise for hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds
Optional: Igongo Cultural Centre near Mbarara, a night game drive, or a sundowner at the lodge.
Day2

On Foot With the Zebras

Walk 2 to 3 hoursReturn drive 4.5 to 5 hours

You wake while the savannah is still blue and cool. With coffee in hand and a ranger at your side, you set out on foot. There is no engine and no windscreen, only the rhythm of your steps and the sounds of the bush waking up. Zebras lift their heads, impalas leap in sudden arcs, and your ranger reads tracks in the dust and tells you the stories behind them.

After a hearty breakfast and a last look at the lake, you begin the journey home with dust on your boots, a camera full of faces and the quiet satisfaction of having seen the wild at walking pace.

  • Sunrise guided walking safari with a UWA ranger
  • Breakfast, check-out and farewell to the park
  • Return drive to Kampala or Entebbe with a lunch stop
Optional: a horseback safari or a nature walk in Rubanga Forest, subject to availability and an additional cost.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Lake Mburo?

The park can be visited all year. The drier months, roughly June to August and December to February, make for easier walking and clearer roads, while the green season brings lush scenery and fewer visitors.

Is walking in the park safe?

Yes. Every walk is led by an armed Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger who knows the terrain and the animals, and who will brief you before you set out.

How fit do I need to be?

The terrain is gentle savannah with no steep climbs. A normal level of fitness and comfortable walking shoes are all you need.

Can we start from Entebbe instead of Kampala?

Of course. Pick-up from Entebbe adds roughly an hour each way. Tell us your hotel and we will plan the timing.

Can I extend the trip to Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth?

Lake Mburo is a natural first stop on the road to southwestern Uganda. We can build in gorilla trekking or a Queen Elizabeth safari, so just ask for a custom itinerary.

How do I pay?

Reserve with a 30% deposit and pay the balance before you travel. You can pay securely online in many currencies by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
