Day-by-Day Itinerary

Every moment is designed to bring you closer to Uganda’s wild heart. Here is exactly what your three days will look like.

Day One

Kampala to Kibale — Arrival & Orientation

Your adventure begins at your Kampala hotel or Entebbe Airport, where your dedicated guide and private safari vehicle will collect you in the morning. The four-hour drive southwest takes you through rolling tea estates and banana groves as Uganda’s landscape transforms around you. Stop at the equator for photos and a brief geography lesson before continuing on to Fort Portal town for a late lunch.

Arrive at your lodge by mid-afternoon. After checking in and freshening up, your guide conducts a detailed briefing on what to expect during chimpanzee tracking: dos and don’ts, what the trackers do before dawn to locate the chimps, and how to move through dense forest. This is where excitement starts to build. Dinner is served at the lodge as the forest falls into its nighttime chorus.

Day Two

Into the Forest — The Chimpanzee Tracking Experience

Wake before sunrise. This is the day you came for. After an early breakfast, your group assembles at the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre at 7:30am where UWA rangers brief you and issue permits. Trackers have been in the forest since 5am following the chimps’ night nests, so they already know where the community is moving.

You enter the forest — 795 square kilometres of ancient moist forest — listening for the unmistakable calls, crashing branches and wild drumming of chimpanzees. When you find the troop, you have one magical hour in their company: watching them groom, feed, play, and travel. This is raw wildlife on their terms, and it is utterly humbling. Return to the lodge by midday for lunch and rest.

The afternoon opens up options. Take a guided nature walk through Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, home to over 200 bird species and colobus monkeys. Or simply relax at the lodge, reviewing your footage and listening to the forest breathe. Dinner is at the lodge, where your guide shares stories of Uganda’s forests and wildlife.

Day Three

Morning Activity & Return to Kampala

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and a final morning stroll in the lodge gardens. Luxury guests have the option of an early morning forest walk before departure. Check-out is by 10am, and your guide will have the vehicle loaded and ready.

The drive back to Kampala follows a slightly different route, passing crater lakes that dot the Albertine Rift Valley — your guide will stop at a viewpoint over Lake Nkuruba, a hidden gem rimmed with forest. Arrive back in Kampala by late afternoon. You will be dropped at your hotel or Entebbe Airport, carrying with you images and memories of Uganda’s wild interior that will last a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you book.

Is chimpanzee tracking in Kibale difficult? +
Kibale tracking is considered moderate difficulty. You will be walking on forest trails for between 30 minutes and 3 hours depending on where the chimps are that morning. The terrain is generally manageable, but some uneven ground and tree roots are involved. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. We advise sturdy closed-toe shoes, long trousers, and layers. Guests with mobility concerns should contact us in advance and we can discuss options.
How close will I get to the chimpanzees? +
Kibale’s Kanyanchu chimpanzee community is fully habituated, meaning they are accustomed to human presence. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) regulations require a minimum distance of 8 metres. In reality, chimpanzees often approach closer on their own terms. Your ranger will ensure all safety and conservation guidelines are observed throughout the encounter.
What is the best time of year for chimpanzee tracking in Kibale? +
Chimpanzee tracking is available year-round in Kibale. The dry seasons (June–August and December–February) offer drier trails and easier walking conditions. The green seasons (March–May and September–November) bring lush landscapes and fewer tourists. We operate 365 days a year and can advise on the best dates for your specific interests and travel window.
What are the age requirements for this tour? +
Uganda Wildlife Authority requires all chimpanzee trekking participants to be aged 15 years and over. Children aged 12–14 may join on some guided forest walks but cannot participate in the tracking itself. Please contact us if you are travelling with children and we will advise on suitable alternatives or itinerary modifications.
Do I need a visa to travel to Uganda? +
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Uganda. East African Tourist Visas (covering Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda) are available and offer excellent value for multi-country itineraries. Uganda visas can be applied for online at the Uganda e-Visa portal or on arrival at Entebbe International Airport. The current fee is approximately USD 50 per person. We always recommend confirming the latest requirements for your passport well before travel.
What happens if the chimpanzees are not found on tracking day? +
Kibale has one of the highest success rates for chimpanzee tracking in Africa, typically above 95%. In the rare event that chimps are not sighted due to unusual forest movement, UWA will offer a complimentary second tracking session. Our guides and trackers do everything possible to ensure sightings. Tracking permits are non-refundable by UWA policy, but we do everything within our power to maximise your chances of a sighting.
Can I combine this tour with gorilla trekking? +
Absolutely — and we highly recommend it. Uganda is the only country on earth where you can trek both chimpanzees and mountain gorillas in a single trip. We can build a combined itinerary including Kibale and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (for gorillas), with Queen Elizabeth National Park in between. Speak to our team about a custom 6, 8, or 10-day itinerary.
