Gorillas in Bwindi
& Mgahinga
Fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas remain on Earth. Uganda protects more than half of them — and Wander & Wonder Tours brings you face-to-face with these extraordinary animals in the ancient, mist-wrapped forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
A Wildlife Encounter
Unlike Any Other
You won't watch them from a distance through binoculars. You won't see them through a pane of glass. You will stand in a cathedral of ferns and ancient trees, breathe the same cool mountain air, and spend a full hour watching a silverback gorilla live his life — nursing, playing, foraging — completely unhurried by your presence.
This is gorilla trekking in Uganda. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and the volcanic slopes of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park together form the most extraordinary primate sanctuary on Earth. Wander & Wonder Tours crafts deeply personal, expertly guided gorilla safaris for midrange and luxury travellers who want to experience this encounter the right way.
vs $1,500 Rwanda
The World's Best
Gorilla Destination
Uganda is home to more mountain gorillas than any other country on Earth — and it remains the most accessible, most affordable, and most intimate gorilla trekking destination in the world.
Uganda holds 459+ mountain gorillas — the world's largest single-country population — spread across 22+ habituated families across Bwindi's four trekking sectors and Mgahinga National Park.
At USD $800 per person, Uganda's gorilla permit is significantly lower than Rwanda's $1,500 — making it the most accessible gorilla trekking destination for discerning international travellers.
Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo each offer a different landscape, gorilla family, and level of physical challenge — meaning there is a perfect trek for every fitness level.
Only 8 visitors are permitted per gorilla family per day. Your permit revenue funds anti-poaching rangers, conservation, and community development surrounding the parks.
Uganda can be visited any time of year with a 99%+ encounter success rate. Dry season offers easier trails; the green season rewards with lush forest scenery and fewer crowds.

What to Expect on
Trek Day
"In a cathedral of ferns and ancient trees, you will breathe the same cool mountain air as a silverback gorilla — completely unhurried by your presence."
Trekking begins at dawn. After a briefing at the park headquarters, you depart into the forest with a UWA ranger and experienced trackers who have already located your assigned gorilla family. The trek itself can take anywhere from one to seven hours depending on where the gorillas have moved overnight.
The moment you find them, time slows. You are permitted one hour — no more, no less — in the presence of the gorilla family. Eight visitors maximum. No guides shouting instructions. Just the forest, the gorillas, and a quiet that you will carry home with you.
Physical requirements: Gorilla trekking ranges from gentle to strenuous depending on terrain and the family's location. Porters are available for hire on-site ($15–20) and are strongly recommended — they will carry your bag and provide support on steeper slopes. Sturdy hiking boots and long-sleeved clothing are essential. Most guests of moderate fitness complete the trek comfortably.
