Trek Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi & Mgahinga

Fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas remain on Earth. Uganda protects more than half of them — and Wander & Wonder Tours brings you face-to-face with these extraordinary animals in the ancient, mist-wrapped forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

459+ Gorillas in Uganda
22+ Habituated Families
99% Encounter Success Rate
$800 Permit — Lowest in Africa

A Wildlife Encounter Unlike Any Other

You won't watch them from a distance through binoculars. You won't see them through a pane of glass. You will stand in a cathedral of ferns and ancient trees, breathe the same cool mountain air, and spend a full hour watching a silverback gorilla live his life — nursing, playing, foraging — completely unhurried by your presence.

This is gorilla trekking in Uganda. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and the volcanic slopes of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park together form the most extraordinary primate sanctuary on Earth. Wander & Wonder Tours crafts deeply personal, expertly guided gorilla safaris for midrange and luxury travellers who want to experience this encounter the right way.

$800 Uganda Gorilla Permit vs $1,500 in Rwanda

What to Expect on Trek Day

Trek duration: 1–7 hours depending on the day. You will spend 1 full hour with the gorillas.

"In a cathedral of ferns and ancient trees, you will breathe the same cool mountain air as a silverback gorilla — completely unhurried by your presence."

Trekking begins at dawn. After a briefing at the park headquarters, you depart into the forest with a UWA ranger and experienced trackers who have already located your assigned gorilla family. The trek itself can take anywhere from one to seven hours depending on where the gorillas have moved overnight.

The moment you find them, time slows. You are permitted one hour — no more, no less — in the presence of the gorilla family. Eight visitors maximum. No guides shouting instructions. Just the forest, the gorillas, and a quiet that you will carry home with you.

Gorilla trekking ranges from gentle to strenuous depending on terrain. Porters are available for hire on-site ($15–20) and are strongly recommended. Sturdy hiking boots and long-sleeved clothing are essential. Most guests of moderate fitness complete the trek comfortably.

Trekking Sectors Buhoma · Rushaga · Nkuringo · Ruhija
Trek Duration 1–7 hours in the forest
Time with Gorillas 1 full hour (standard) · 4 hours (habituation)
Group Size Maximum 8 visitors per gorilla family
Min. Age 15 years (Uganda Wildlife Authority requirement)

Frequently Asked Questions

The gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs $800 per person for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, $500 for African citizens, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens — all set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Our full 3-day gorilla trekking package, including the permit, accommodation, transport, and all meals, starts from $1,400 per person. Buhoma (north) is the most established and easiest to reach — ideal for first-timers with comfortable terrain. Rushaga (south) has the most habituated gorilla families available and is closest to Lake Bunyonyi. Nkuringo offers dramatic scenery with steep terrain and the most remote feel. Ruhija is the highest in altitude and excellent for birding alongside your trek. Our team will match you to the right sector based on your fitness level and travel style.
Gorilla trekking can range from 1 to 7 hours depending on where the gorilla family is located on the day of your trek. Most treks take 2–4 hours on moderate terrain through the forest. Sturdy hiking boots, walking poles (provided), and a porter ($15–20, hired on-site) make the experience accessible for most fitness levels. The Gorilla Habituation Experience (4 hours with the gorillas) is more demanding and better suited for guests with good physical fitness.
Uganda can be visited year-round for gorilla trekking — with a 99%+ encounter rate, you will see the gorillas regardless of season. The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer the most comfortable trekking conditions with drier trails. The green season (March–May and October–November) brings fewer crowds, greater permit availability, lower prices, and lush forest scenery — often producing the most dramatic photography conditions.
Absolutely — and we strongly recommend it. Our most popular combination packages include chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest National Park and gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Kibale is approximately five hours from Bwindi by road, making a single trip covering both entirely practical. Uganda is the only country in the world where you can trek both mountain gorillas and wild chimpanzees on a single journey.
Uganda is widely regarded as one of East Africa's safest safari destinations for international travellers. The national parks are well-secured by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, and Kampala is an increasingly modern and navigable city. All Wander & Wonder Tours safaris are guided by experienced, locally-based professionals with deep knowledge of both wildlife and safe travel logistics across Uganda. We provide 24/7 WhatsApp support for all clients while on tour.
