Where the
Action Happens

01
Jinja — Source of the Nile

East Africa's undisputed adventure capital sits at the point where Lake Victoria pours into the world's longest river. Two hours from Kampala, it's the hub for rafting, bungee, kayaking, and quad biking — all in one place, on one magnificent river.

02
Rwenzori Mountains

The legendary "Mountains of the Moon" straddle the equator on Uganda's western border. Africa's third highest range is home to equatorial glaciers, otherworldly giant groundsels, and the 5,109m Margherita Peak — one of the most unique summit experiences in Africa.

03
Sipi Falls

Three spectacular waterfalls cascade down the slopes of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda. The dramatic landscape makes this a world-class destination for abseiling, hiking, and photography — combined with Uganda's finest single-origin coffee experience.

04
Mount Elgon

The world's largest ancient volcanic caldera sits at the summit of Mount Elgon, shared between Uganda and Kenya. Trekking to the crater rim offers solitude, extraordinary geology, and the chance to explore one of East Africa's least-visited national parks.

05
Mabira Forest Reserve

One of Uganda's last intact rainforest reserves, Mabira is a 30,000-hectare canopy sanctuary just 90 minutes from Kampala. The zipline and canopy walk offer a memorable introduction to Uganda's forest ecosystem without requiring multiple days of travel.

Lake Victoria & Sesse Islands

Africa's largest lake covers over 68,000 km² and touches three countries. The Ugandan shores offer island hopping by motorboat, visits to Ngamba chimpanzee sanctuary, and an entirely different perspective on Uganda for those who venture off the standard wildlife circuit.

FAQs

01 Is white water rafting on the Nile safe for beginners?
Yes — and the Nile at Jinja is one of the best places in the world for first-time Grade 5 rafters precisely because of the high safety standards that have been maintained by operators there for over 20 years. All participants receive a comprehensive safety briefing, are equipped with certified personal flotation devices and helmets, and are guided by experienced international instructors. No prior rafting experience is required. The full-day experience includes calmer sections alongside the Grade 5 rapids, ensuring all fitness levels are included.
02 How fit do I need to be for the Rwenzori Mountains trek?
The Rwenzori summit circuit is a serious multi-day high-altitude trek and requires a good baseline of physical fitness. You should be comfortable with 6–8 hours of hiking per day on steep, often muddy terrain and capable of managing altitude up to 5,109m. The trek is not technical climbing — no specialist equipment is needed — but it is demanding. We recommend training with consistent hiking and cardio exercise for at least 6–8 weeks before departure. Our team will assess your fitness during the booking process and advise accordingly.
03 Can I combine an adventure package with gorilla trekking?
Absolutely — and this is one of our most popular combinations. Package A-06 (Adventure + Gorilla Combo) or the 14-day Overland Backpacker Route (A-10) both incorporate Jinja adventure activities alongside gorilla trekking in Bwindi and chimpanzee tracking in Kibale. We can also build a completely custom itinerary that combines any adventure activities with any primate or wildlife experiences. Email bookings@wanderandwonderug.com or WhatsApp +44 7826 805254 and our team will design your ideal combination.
04 When is the best time to visit Uganda for adventure activities?
Most adventure activities in Uganda run year-round. White water rafting on the Nile is actually at its most thrilling during and after the rainy season (April–May and October–November) when river levels are higher and rapids are more powerful. Mountain trekking on Rwenzori and Elgon is best in the drier months (June–September and December–February) when trails are firmer and summit views are clearer. Sipi Falls is spectacular year-round but particularly dramatic after seasonal rains when water volumes peak.
05 Do I need adventure travel insurance?
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that includes adventure sports cover for any activities you intend to participate in — particularly white water rafting, bungee jumping, abseiling, and mountain trekking. Standard travel insurance policies often exclude these activities. Our team can advise on appropriate cover levels. Some activity providers at Jinja require proof of insurance or a signed waiver before participation. We will flag any specific insurance requirements when confirming your package.
