Uganda in Full — Four Parks, Eight Days, One Price That Won't Break the Bank

Uganda is one of Africa's most extraordinary safari destinations — and you do not need a luxury budget to experience it properly. The 8-Day Budget Uganda Discovery is our most comprehensive itinerary at our most accessible price point, designed for travellers who care deeply about the wildlife, the experience, and the authenticity of the journey.

In eight days you will stand at the base of the thundering Murchison Falls, track tree-climbing lions and hippos through Queen Elizabeth National Park, encounter zebras and impalas on horseback or by boat at Lake Mburo, and finally trek deep into Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for a face-to-face encounter with mountain gorillas. All four of Uganda's iconic southern national parks, in a single seamless journey.

Budget does not mean corners cut. You travel with the same certified naturalist guides as our luxury departures, your USD 800 gorilla permit is included and secured immediately on booking, and all meals are covered. The difference is shared transport, well-appointed guesthouses and budget safari camps — and a price that reflects real value for money.

Four of Uganda's Greatest Parks

Each park has its own character, landscape, and wildlife cast. This tour visits all four of Uganda's premier southern parks in a logical, seamless circuit.

Murchison Falls National Park Uganda
Days 2–3
Murchison Falls NP
Africa's most powerful waterfall · Nile boat cruise

Watch the entire volume of the River Nile explode through a 7-metre gap. Home to hippos, Nile crocodiles, giraffes, elephants, buffalo, and the elusive shoebill stork.

Queen Elizabeth National Park Uganda
Days 4–5
Queen Elizabeth NP
Tree-climbing lions · Kazinga Channel cruise

Uganda's most visited park — a mosaic of savannah, wetland, and forest. Famous for the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha and the world's most productive waterway for wildlife viewing.

Lake Mburo National Park Uganda
Day 6
Lake Mburo NP
Zebra & impala · Boat safari · Horse riding

Uganda's smallest and most accessible national park. The only park in Uganda with zebra and eland. A boat safari on the lake offers outstanding birding and hippo encounters at close range.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Eight days travelling Uganda's most rewarding circuit — north to the falls, south through savannah, and deep into the mountain gorilla forest. All meals, permits, and transfers included throughout.

Your Uganda journey starts at Entebbe International Airport, where your Wander & Wonder Tours guide will be waiting at arrivals. After transferring to your overnight accommodation in Entebbe or Kampala, the evening is yours to explore, rest, and prepare for the days ahead.

Your guide will join you for a welcome dinner and a full briefing of the eight-day itinerary — what to pack each day, what to expect at each park, and how to make the most of every moment in Uganda's wild spaces.

An early start for the 4–5 hour drive north to Murchison Falls National Park — Uganda's largest protected area at nearly 3,900 square kilometres. The landscape transforms as you leave the central plateau and descend toward the Albertine Rift, with savannah and acacia woodland taking over from the green hills around Kampala.

Arrive in time for lunch, check into your camp, and spend the afternoon on your first game drive through the park's northern circuit. Elephants, giraffes, oribi, and buffalo are commonly encountered even on the first afternoon. Your guide will brief you on tomorrow's boat cruise over dinner.

Rise before dawn for a morning game drive that often yields the best wildlife sightings of the entire safari — lions returning from the hunt, giraffes silhouetted against the sunrise, and elephants moving to the river to drink.

After breakfast, board your boat at Paraa for the iconic Nile boat cruise upstream to the base of Murchison Falls. This two-hour cruise is one of Uganda's great wildlife experiences: hippos surface alongside the boat, Nile crocodiles bask on sand banks, African fish eagles call overhead, and with patience you may spot the ancient, extraordinary shoebill stork in the papyrus beds.

The falls themselves — where the entire volume of the River Nile is forced through a rock gap barely 7 metres wide, plunging 43 metres in a wall of white water — are a sight of raw, unforgettable power.

After a final morning game drive in Murchison, you depart south for Queen Elizabeth National Park — a 4–5 hour scenic drive through Fort Portal and the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains (the fabled Mountains of the Moon).

Queen Elizabeth NP is Uganda's most biodiverse park: savannah, wetland, rainforest, and the volcanic Kazinga Channel all converge here. Arrive in the afternoon and take your first game drive through the Kasenyi Plains, where lions and hyenas are commonly seen. The park is home to over 95 mammal species and 600 bird species — more than in the entire British Isles.

A full day in Queen Elizabeth — and one of the finest wildlife days of the entire tour. The morning is spent on the Kazinga Channel boat cruise, a 2-hour journey along a natural waterway connecting Lakes George and Edward. The channel banks are lined with the densest concentration of hippos in Africa, alongside enormous Nile crocodiles, water buffalo, and a staggering variety of wading and water birds including the rare African skimmer.

After lunch, we drive south to the Ishasha sector — one of only two places in the world where lions regularly climb fig trees. Spotting a pride lounging in the branches of a fig tree against an open African sky is one of Uganda's most unusual and unforgettable wildlife moments.

A shorter driving day takes you east to Lake Mburo National Park — Uganda's smallest national park and its closest to Kampala. What Mburo lacks in size it more than compensates for in character: it is the only park in Uganda where you will find zebra, eland, impala, and topi, alongside hippos, crocodiles, warthogs, and the wonderfully bizarre African finfoot.

The afternoon offers a relaxed boat safari on the lake — a gentler, more intimate experience than the larger Nile cruise, with extraordinary birding and the chance of a very close encounter with a hippo pod. Horse and walking safaris are also available for guests wishing to experience the bush on foot or in the saddle.

The anticipation builds today. After breakfast at Lake Mburo, you depart for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — a 3–4 hour journey that carries you southwest through the beautiful rolling hills of southwestern Uganda, with sweeping views of terraced hillsides and tea plantations as you approach the Kigezi Highlands.

Bwindi announces itself before you reach it — a dark, ancient mass of forest rising from the hillsides, mist clinging to the canopy even in the dry season. Check into your lodge and attend your gorilla trekking briefing: rules of the forest, physical preparation, photography guidelines, and what to expect when you find the gorillas.

The day you have been building toward. An early, light breakfast before transferring to Bwindi park headquarters for the 7:30 AM assembly. You will be assigned to a gorilla family and depart into the forest with two armed Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and your certified guide.

Gorilla treks at Bwindi can last anywhere from two to eight hours. The forest is steep, dense, and magnificently alive. When the rangers' radio crackles and the guide signals you forward, your heart rate will climb — and then the forest opens, and there they are. A mountain gorilla family going about their day: mothers with infants clinging to their chests, juveniles rough-and-tumbling in the undergrowth, and the silverback — enormous, calm, and utterly present — watching you with calm intelligence.

You have one hour. It will feel like five minutes. It will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Collect your Certificate of Gorilla Trekking Participation and begin the long, happy road back to Entebbe for your onward flights. En-route lunch is included.

★★★★★

"I was on a tight budget but determined not to miss the gorillas. Wander & Wonder delivered everything they promised and more. The guide was outstanding — as good as any I've had on more expensive safaris — and the gorilla encounter in Bwindi left me completely speechless. Four incredible parks in eight days. Unbeatable value."

"I specifically chose the budget tour as a solo traveller and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of everything — the camps were clean and well-run, the food was excellent, and the group I shared the vehicle with became travel friends. Murchison Falls took my breath away, and the gorilla trek was something I simply cannot put into words."

"We did the 8-day discovery as a group of four friends and the whole experience exceeded every expectation. Brian's knowledge of Uganda's parks is extraordinary — the shoebill sighting on the Nile cruise, the tree-climbing lions at Ishasha, and the gorilla trek at Bwindi. Three moments I will carry with me forever. Book this trip."

Frequently Asked Questions

The budget designation refers to the accommodation tier and vehicle sharing arrangement. You stay at well-maintained budget guesthouses and tented camps (private rooms, en-suite or shared facilities) rather than boutique lodges, and you share a safari vehicle with up to 6 other guests rather than having a private vehicle. Everything else — the guides, the permits, the wildlife encounters, the meals, and the itinerary — is identical to our mid-range collection.

Yes, absolutely. The Uganda gorilla trekking permit (USD 800 per person, payable to Uganda Wildlife Authority) is fully included in the tour price. It is the single most expensive component of any gorilla safari in Uganda and we secure it for you immediately upon receipt of your deposit. You will never be asked to pay for it separately.

The game drives, boat cruises, and park visits are accessible for all fitness levels. The gorilla trek on Day 8 is the most physically demanding element — rated moderate to strenuous, with treks of 2–8 hours through hilly, often steep and muddy terrain. You do not need to be a hiker or athlete, but a reasonable baseline fitness will help you enjoy it fully. We always recommend hiring a porter at the park (small additional cost) to carry your daypack and assist on steep sections.

Yes. We can apply this exact same 8-day itinerary with mid-range or luxury accommodation and a private safari vehicle. Contact us for a tailored upgrade quote — it is one of the most popular requests we receive. Many guests start with the budget tour for their first Uganda trip and return for a luxury experience.

This tour offers an extraordinary diversity of wildlife across four parks. At Murchison Falls you will see elephants, giraffes, Nile crocodiles, hippos, buffalo, oribi, waterbuck, and potentially the shoebill stork. At Queen Elizabeth NP expect tree-climbing lions, leopards (less frequently), elephants, hippos, topi, Uganda kob, and over 600 bird species. Lake Mburo adds zebra, impala, eland, and topi to your list. And Bwindi is, of course, the mountain gorilla highlight — with the added possibility of forest elephants, L'Hoest's monkeys, and over 350 bird species.

Uganda is consistently ranked among East Africa's safest destinations for tourists. The national parks are well-managed by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, and Wander & Wonder Tours has deep local relationships across all the areas we operate in. Our UK-based director and Uganda-based operations team are in constant contact throughout your safari. Standard travel precautions apply, and comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all guests.

Most international visitors to Uganda require a tourist visa, available online before departure at visas.immigration.go.ug. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory and checked at the border. We strongly recommend consulting your GP or travel clinic at least 6–8 weeks before departure regarding malaria prophylaxis and any other recommended vaccinations. Your pre-departure pack from our team will contain all visa, health, and packing information in detail.

To confirm your booking, a 30% non-refundable deposit is required. This secures your gorilla permit immediately — which is critical given limited availability. The balance is due 60 days before your departure date. You can pay your deposit directly through our secure PesaPal payment gateway or via international bank transfer. Once your deposit is received, you will receive a confirmation email, your permit reservation details, and your pre-departure guide within 48 hours.
