Wander and Wonder Tours — Safari Experience

Game
Drives
in Uganda

Traverse the savanna, wetland, and woodland ecosystems of Uganda's finest national parks aboard custom safari vehicles, in search of the Big Five and the remarkable diversity that makes Uganda Africa's most overlooked safari destination.

The Experience

Uganda's Wildlife
Beyond the Gorillas

Most visitors arrive in Uganda for the gorillas and leave astonished by what they found beyond them. Uganda's national parks contain some of the most productive wildlife ecosystems in Africa — vast savannas teeming with buffalo, elephant, Uganda kob, waterbuck, and lion; crater lakes edged with hippos and flamingos; river channels where Nile crocodiles reach lengths that defy credulity. And unlike the better-known safari destinations of East Africa, Uganda's parks are rarely crowded. A game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park may produce a sighting of lions in a fig tree with no other vehicle in sight.

Wander and Wonder designs game drive experiences that go beyond the checklist. Our guides are trained naturalists with years of experience in Uganda's parks — they understand animal behaviour, know the specific valleys and water sources where certain species concentrate, and interpret what you are witnessing in ecological and behavioural terms. A game drive with Wander and Wonder is not a wildlife lottery; it is a curated encounter with a functioning ecosystem, led by people who understand it deeply.

We operate custom-fitted open-sided 4WD safari vehicles with elevated seating, 360-degree view access, and sufficient space for each guest to operate a camera lens without compromise. Every vehicle carries binoculars, a naturalist field guide library, and a cooled refreshment box.

Where We Drive

Uganda's Premier
Game Drive Destinations

Queen Elizabeth NP
Western Uganda
Queen Elizabeth National Park
Uganda's most celebrated park — home to tree-climbing lions, massive buffalo herds, savanna elephant, hippo channels, and over 600 bird species across a stunning landscape of savanna, forest, and volcanic crater lakes.
Murchison Falls
Northern Uganda
Murchison Falls National Park
Uganda's largest park, where the Nile rushes through a 7-metre gorge with incomprehensible force. The surrounding savanna hosts Rothschild's giraffe, lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and enormous congregations of hippos.
Lake Mburo
Central Western Uganda
Lake Mburo National Park
The only park in Uganda with zebra, and home to impala, eland, topi, and the elusive leopard. An intimate park ideal for a short safari or a night game drive with spotlight, offering a quieter, more personal game drive experience.

Wildlife Highlights

What the
Parks Offer

Uganda's game drive ecosystems are exceptional for their diversity. Across our featured parks, you may encounter any of the following species, depending on season, location, and the particular fortune of the day.

01
African Elephant
Queen Elizabeth hosts one of Uganda's largest elephant populations. Forest elephants — smaller than their savanna counterparts — move between the Maramagambo Forest and the Kasenyi plains in daily cycles that expert guides can anticipate.
02
Lion — Including Tree-Climbers
The Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of only two places in Africa where lions regularly climb and rest in fig trees — a behaviour so rare that it remains unexplained by scientists. Wander and Wonder includes Ishasha in all Queen Elizabeth itineraries.
03
Rothschild's Giraffe
One of the most endangered giraffe subspecies, Murchison Falls hosts a thriving population of Rothschild's giraffe — distinguished by their creamy legs and five ossicones. Watching a tower of giraffe move across the Murchison plain at dusk is unforgettable.
04
Nile Hippopotamus
The Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth and the Nile banks at Murchison contain some of Africa's highest concentrations of hippos. During game drives near water, groups of 50 to 80 hippos in a single pool are not unusual.
05
Leopard
Present across all three parks, the leopard's nocturnal and secretive nature makes daytime sightings a special privilege. Night game drives at Lake Mburo increase the probability significantly. Wander and Wonder guides know the territories of resident leopards well.
06
Uganda Kob
The national antelope of Uganda — featured on the coat of arms — congregates in enormous herds on the Kasenyi plains of Queen Elizabeth. Their golden coats in late afternoon light against the green savanna constitute one of the defining visual experiences of Ugandan safari.
07
African Buffalo
Herds of several hundred buffalo are common in both Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls. The African buffalo is classified as one of the continent's most dangerous animals — observing them from a safari vehicle as they move with collective power across open ground is an exercise in respectful awe.
08
Nile Crocodile
The crocodiles of the Victoria Nile at Murchison are among the largest in Africa. Adults exceeding five metres in length are regularly observed on the riverbanks during game drives near the water's edge. Their prehistoric stillness and sudden explosive speed are equally unnerving.

Timing Your Drive

Three Windows
of the Day

06:00 — 10:00 AM

Morning Drive

The most productive drive of the day. Predators that have hunted through the night may still be near their kills; herbivores are active and grazing; the light is extraordinary — low, golden, and directional. Temperatures are cool and comfortable. A morning drive sets the tone for an entire safari day. Most Wander and Wonder itineraries prioritise early departure to maximise this window.

04:00 — 07:00 PM

Afternoon / Sundowner Drive

As the heat of midday passes, animals return to activity. Predators begin to stir toward the hunt; the golden afternoon light is ideal for photography; sundowner drinks on the vehicle at a scenic overlook are among the great safari rituals. The afternoon drive typically ends at or after sunset, with the last light painting the savanna in extraordinary colours.

08:00 PM — 11:00 PM

Night Game Drive

Available in Lake Mburo National Park, the night game drive reveals a different cast of characters: leopard, civet, genet, spring hare, various owl species, and the reflected eye-shine of countless nocturnal creatures in the spotlight beam. Many guests describe the night drive as their most visceral safari experience — the darkness amplifies every sound and makes the bush feel genuinely wild and unpredictable.

Our Approach

The Wander and Wonder
Difference on Drive

A game drive is only as good as the guide leading it. Our guides are not drivers who happen to know some animals — they are trained naturalists with specialist knowledge of the ecosystems they operate in. Most hold formal wildlife guiding qualifications and have spent years in their specific parks, developing relationships with research teams and an intimate knowledge of individual animals' territories and behaviours.

Purpose-Built Vehicles

Custom 4WD vehicles with raised, open-sided seating, 360-degree visibility, camera-friendly window positions, and sufficient space that no guest is ever compromised by another's equipment or sightlines.

Small Group Policy

We maintain a maximum of 6 guests per vehicle on all game drives. This ensures a personal, quiet experience and allows each guest direct conversation with the guide at all times.

Naturalist Interpretation

What sets our guides apart is their ability to contextualise what you are seeing — to explain not just the identification of a species but its ecological role, its behaviour in the moment, and its relationship to the landscape around it.

Flexible Pacing

We do not rush. If a sighting warrants an hour's patient observation — a lion stalking, a leopard feeding — we give it that time. Our itineraries are designed with flexibility to honour the unpredictability of wild animals.
