Safari Overview

Two of Uganda's Greatest
Wildlife Experiences, Combined

This 6-day itinerary is the definitive introduction to Uganda's extraordinary wildlife — combining the intimate, once-in-a-lifetime encounter with mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest with a full big-game safari across Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda's most biodiverse protected area.

You will trek through ancient jungle to sit with one of the 1,000 remaining mountain gorillas on earth. Then, hours later, you are on the open savanna watching buffalo herds move at dusk, or drifting along the Kazinga Channel past pods of hippos and armies of Nile crocodiles.

No other single itinerary in East Africa offers this contrast — primordial forest and sweeping savanna, primates and big game — within just six days. Our team handles every detail, so your only job is to arrive and be present.

Day by Day

Six Days in the Wild Heart of Uganda

From ancient forest to open savanna — every day of this itinerary delivers something remarkable. Here is exactly what to expect.

1
Day One
Kampala / Entebbe — Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Into the Impenetrable — Arrival at the Edge of the Forest

Your safari begins with an early morning pickup from Kampala or Entebbe. The drive southwest takes roughly 8–9 hours, winding through fertile tea-country highlands, crater lake districts, and equatorial farmlands that announce you are far from any city. Alternatively, a charter flight option reduces travel to under 90 minutes (available on request). Arrive at your forest lodge in the afternoon — unpack, take a walk along the forest border, and let the sounds of Bwindi settle around you. Your guide conducts an evening briefing covering tomorrow's trek protocols, what to pack, and what to expect when you finally find the gorillas.

Day Two
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — Gorilla Trek Day

The Trek — Face to Face with a Mountain Gorilla

This is the day that changes everything. You wake before dawn, take an early breakfast, and set out with your UWA ranger guide and a group of no more than eight people into the forest. Bwindi is genuinely impenetrable in places — the undergrowth thick, the canopy dense, the air heavy with moisture and life. Treks can last anywhere from one to eight hours; the gorillas move, and you follow their tracks. When you find them — a silverback, several females, infants tumbling through the ferns — time ceases to matter. You are allowed one extraordinary, unrushed hour in their presence. Watch them feed, groom, play, and move. This is the closest most humans will ever come to truly wild, free-ranging great apes. Return to the lodge for a hot lunch, afternoon rest, and a guided forest edge walk at sunset.

Day Three
Bwindi — Queen Elizabeth National Park Transfer

From Forest to Floodplain — Crossing Uganda's Heartland

After a leisurely breakfast with the sounds of Bwindi still fresh in your ears, your vehicle departs northeast toward Queen Elizabeth National Park. This 3–4 hour drive is a journey in itself — passing through the Ishasha sector of the park (famous for its tree-climbing lions), descending from the highland forests into the Great Rift Valley's western arm, and arriving at the edge of a landscape that could not be more different from what you left this morning. Check in to your lodge overlooking the Kazinga Channel or the savanna plains. Afternoon game drive through the Kasenyi plains — your first chance to encounter QE NP's elephants, Uganda kob, and buffalo in enormous herds.

Day Four
Queen Elizabeth National Park — Full Day

Game Drives and the Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

A full day in Queen Elizabeth — one of Uganda's finest wildlife days. Morning game drive across the Kasenyi plains as the savanna cools in the early light, watching herds of buffalo and Uganda kob move across the grassland, elephants at waterholes, warthogs at full sprint. Then, after a lodge lunch, the afternoon belongs to the Kazinga Channel — a 33km natural waterway connecting Lake George and Lake Edward, home to one of Africa's highest concentrations of hippos and Nile crocodiles. Your boat drifts within metres of hippo pods and enormous crocs basking on the banks, while hundreds of waterbirds — pelicans, cormorants, kingfishers, skimmers — fill the air. This cruise is one of the great wildlife boat experiences in Africa. Return to the lodge for sundowners and a memorable dinner.

Day Five
Queen Elizabeth National Park — Ishasha Sector

Tree-Climbing Lions and Chimpanzee Tracking

Day five is one of the most varied wildlife days on any Uganda itinerary. The morning takes you south to the Ishasha sector — a remote corner of Queen Elizabeth famous worldwide for a unique population of lions that rest in the branches of enormous fig trees, a behaviour rarely documented elsewhere in Africa. Your guide knows where to look, and patience invariably rewards. Optional afternoon chimpanzee tracking in Kyambura Gorge — a dramatic ravine cut into the savanna through which the Kyambura River flows, hiding a rainforest community of habituated chimpanzees. Tracking here is more adventurous than in Kibale: you descend into the gorge on foot and track chimps through riverine forest with sheer walls of rock above you. Return to the lodge for a final sunset over the Rift Valley escarpment.

Day Six
Queen Elizabeth — Kampala / Entebbe

Final Morning Game Drive and Departure

Your last morning in the field. A final early game drive before breakfast — often when the bush is most alive, predators most active, and the light most beautiful for photography. Return to the lodge for breakfast, check out, and begin the drive north toward Kampala or Entebbe. Arrive in time for evening connecting flights, or extend your stay with an optional city tour of Kampala or a relaxation night at Entebbe's lakeside hotels. Your guide accompanies you to the point of departure, ensuring a smooth, unhurried end to one of Uganda's most complete wildlife experiences.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I travel between Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth National Park? +
The drive from Bwindi to Queen Elizabeth National Park takes approximately 3–4 hours, depending on which sector of QE NP your lodge is in. The route passes through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth — famous for its tree-climbing lions — so this transfer itself becomes a game drive. We route the journey to maximise wildlife viewing and stop at scenic viewpoints. A charter flight option between the two parks is also available at an additional cost.
What makes Queen Elizabeth National Park special? +
Queen Elizabeth is Uganda's most biodiverse national park, straddling the border of two rift valley lakes and offering an extraordinary range of habitats — open savanna, riverine forest, wetlands, and the Kyambura Gorge. It is home to over 95 mammal species including elephants, buffalos, hippos, leopards, hyenas, and the famous tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha sector. Over 600 bird species have been recorded, making it one of Africa's top birding destinations. The Kazinga Channel boat cruise is widely considered one of the finest wildlife experiences in East Africa.
Is the gorilla permit ($800) really included? +
Yes, the Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permit ($800 per person) is fully included in the price of this safari package. This permit is issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority and grants you access to one habituated mountain gorilla family for one hour. Because permits are strictly limited and in high demand — especially during peak season — we secure them at the time of booking. This is one of the key reasons to book well in advance.
Will I definitely see gorillas? +
The gorilla encounter success rate at Bwindi is exceptionally high — over 98% of treks result in a confirmed sighting. Bwindi's habituated gorilla families are tracked by rangers every day, so your guide always knows their approximate location before the trek begins. On the rare occasion a trek is unsuccessful (usually due to extreme weather), UWA typically offers a rescheduled trek at no extra cost for the permit. In over 12 years of operating gorilla treks, our clients have an essentially perfect sighting record.
Is the Kyambura Gorge chimpanzee tracking included? +
Kyambura Gorge chimpanzee tracking is listed as optional on Day 5. The activity requires a separate permit (approximately $60–80 per person) which is not included in the base package price, though we can arrange it for you in advance. We include time in the Day 5 itinerary specifically to accommodate it if you wish to add it. Chimpanzee sightings in Kyambura are less guaranteed than at Kibale Forest, but the dramatic gorge setting and adventurous descent make it a compelling experience regardless.
What is the best time of year for this safari? +
This safari operates year-round. The dry seasons — June to August and December to February — are considered peak, with easier trekking conditions, better road access, and lighter vegetation for wildlife viewing. Gorilla permits are hardest to secure during these months, so advance booking is critical. The green seasons (March–May and September–November) bring fewer visitors, lush scenery, and slightly easier permit availability — and gorillas are active year-round regardless of rain. We can advise on the ideal timing based on your priorities.
Can this itinerary be extended or customised? +
Absolutely. Popular extensions include adding chimpanzee tracking at Kibale Forest (between Bwindi and QE NP, adding 1–2 days), a visit to Murchison Falls National Park in the north, a Nile boat cruise, Lake Bunyonyi relaxation days, or a Batwa cultural experience near Bwindi. We can also add a second gorilla trek permit, upgrade lodge categories, or arrange fly-in options for the full itinerary. Contact us with your dates and interests and we will design the perfect extended itinerary.
How do I get to Uganda? What airport should I fly into? +
Entebbe International Airport (EBB), located 40km from Kampala, is Uganda's main international gateway. Direct flights operate from London Heathrow, Amsterdam, Paris, Dubai, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and several other hubs. Most European, North American, and Australian travellers connect through Amsterdam (KLM), London (British Airways), Dubai (Emirates), or Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines). Your safari begins with an Entebbe airport pickup on Day 1 and ends with an Entebbe drop-off on Day 6. We can advise on recommended airlines and optimal routing for your departure city.
