6 Days with Gorillas & Chimps in the Heart of Uganda
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest · Kibale National Park · Full-Board · Permits Included
Gorilla permits are strictly limited to 8 guests per family per day — early booking is essential.
Two of the World's Greatest Wildlife Encounters — in Six Extraordinary Days
There are perhaps a dozen experiences in the natural world that change you permanently. Standing face-to-face with a mountain gorilla is one. Watching chimpanzees move through the forest canopy — our closest living relatives, sharing 98.7% of our DNA — is another.
On this six-day journey, we bring both encounters together into a single, seamless safari. You begin at Kibale National Park — the Primate Capital of the World — where over 1,500 chimpanzees inhabit a forest of extraordinary beauty. Then we take you south to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to over half the world's remaining mountain gorillas.
Every detail is handled by Wander & Wonder Tours: your gorilla and chimpanzee permits, expert guides with deep knowledge of each park, comfortable full-board lodges, and all road transfers. All you carry is your camera and your sense of wonder.
"Africa changes you forever. Let Uganda change you."

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Six carefully crafted days combining Uganda's two greatest primate experiences. All transfers, permits, guiding, and meals are included.
Your Uganda adventure begins the moment you land at Entebbe International Airport. Your dedicated Wander & Wonder Tours guide will meet you at arrivals, assist with your luggage, and transfer you comfortably to your overnight accommodation in Entebbe or Kampala.
The evening is at leisure — settle in, enjoy a welcome dinner, and receive your full pre-trek briefing from your guide. You will cover what to expect on your chimpanzee and gorilla treks, what to pack, and receive your day-by-day programme in detail.
After an early breakfast, you depart for Kibale National Park in western Uganda — a journey of approximately 5–6 hours through tea plantations, rolling hills, and the beautiful Ugandan countryside.
Arrive in time for lunch at your lodge, followed by a relaxed afternoon nature walk around the forest edge — an ideal introduction to Kibale's incredible biodiversity. Over 375 bird species have been recorded here, and the forest is alive with L'Hoest's monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and black-and-white colobus.
The morning you have been preparing for. Rise early for a light breakfast before heading to the park headquarters for your 7:30 AM chimpanzee tracking briefing. Your certified naturalist guide will lead you into the forest in search of Kibale's habituated chimpanzee communities.
Chimpanzees can be heard from some distance — their calls echoing through the canopy — but finding them in the dense, green cathedral of Kibale is a different experience entirely. You may spend one to two hours in the presence of a chimpanzee community, watching them feed, socialise, groom, and move with extraordinary athleticism through the trees above you.
The afternoon is free to rest, explore the lodge surroundings, or take an optional guided birding walk with your guide.
After breakfast, you depart Kibale and begin the scenic 4–5 hour drive south towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The route takes you through the beautiful Crater Lakes region near Fort Portal — a landscape of volcanic craters filled with deep green and blue lakes, a visual reward in its own right.
Arrive at your Bwindi lodge in the afternoon. Take time to settle in, walk the lodge grounds, and absorb the atmosphere of this ancient, mist-laden forest. This evening your guide will conduct your gorilla trekking briefing — covering the rules, what to expect, physical preparation, and photography guidelines.
There is simply no preparing yourself fully for the moment a mountain gorilla — a silverback weighing up to 200 kilograms — looks you in the eye. The morning begins before sunrise. After a light breakfast, you are transferred to the park headquarters for a 7:30 AM assembly and final briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.
Your group (maximum 8 visitors) departs into the forest with two armed rangers and your expert guide. Treks vary from 2 to 8 hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight. When you find them — and you will — you are granted one precious, strictly enforced hour in their presence.
Mountain gorillas are profoundly gentle, deeply intelligent, and achingly human in their family bonds. You will watch mothers tend their young, juveniles play, and the silverback move through the forest with a dignity that defies description.
Return to your lodge for a celebratory lunch and your official Certificate of Gorilla Trekking Participation from Uganda Wildlife Authority.
After a final breakfast at your Bwindi lodge, you depart on the scenic return journey to Entebbe — approximately 7–8 hours by road, with stops en route. Your guide will be with you throughout, sharing stories and pointing out the landscapes you might have missed on the way in.
Arrive at Entebbe Airport in the evening in time for your international departure. For those with early-morning flights or wishing to extend, an additional night in Entebbe can be arranged by our team.

Frequently Asked Questions
Uganda gorilla permits are capped at 8 visitors per gorilla family per day, meaning availability is strictly limited. We recommend booking at least 3–6 months in advance for most dates, and 6–12 months ahead for peak season travel (June–September and December–February). Wander & Wonder Tours will secure your permit the moment your deposit is received.
Gorilla trekking is rated moderate to strenuous. Treks can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved. The terrain in Bwindi is hilly, often muddy, and involves hiking through thick vegetation. You do not need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness is important. We always recommend a porter (available for a small fee) to carry your daypack and assist on steep sections. The minimum age is 15 years.
Yes. Mountain gorillas in Uganda are habituated — they have grown accustomed to human presence over many years. All treks are conducted with a minimum of two armed Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and a certified guide. You will be briefed on the strict protocols before entering the forest. Uganda is consistently rated one of East Africa's safest destinations for tourists.
The tour operates year-round. The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer easier trekking conditions with drier trails and better visibility. The green seasons (March–May and October–November) bring lusher landscapes, fewer visitors, and often lower lodge rates — though trails can be muddy. Gorillas and chimpanzees are present year-round.
Most international travellers require a Uganda tourist visa. East African Tourist Visas (valid for Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda) are also popular. Visas can be obtained online before travel at visas.immigration.go.ug. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for all visitors. Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining. Our pre-departure guide covers all visa and health requirements in detail.
Absolutely. Every Wander & Wonder Tours itinerary is tailor-made. You can extend this tour to include a day on the Kazinga Channel at Queen Elizabeth National Park, add a Kibale Chimp Habituation Experience (a full day with a chimpanzee community), visit the Rwenzori Mountains, or extend with a Lake Victoria island escape. Contact us and we will design your perfect Uganda experience.
Key items include: long-sleeved shirts and long trousers (in neutral or dark colours — no camouflage), waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support, a rain jacket or poncho, gardening gloves for handling vegetation on steep gorilla trails, a daypack, insect repellent, and plenty of water. You will receive our full packing list in the pre-departure guide sent with your booking confirmation.
A 30% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your booking and secure permits. The balance is due 60 days before departure. Cancellations received 60 or more days before departure will receive a full refund of the balance (deposit is non-refundable due to permit costs). Cancellations within 60 days of departure may result in partial or full loss of payments. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance including trip cancellation cover.
