Wander & Wonder Tours — Uganda
7-Day Uganda Birding Safari
700+ Species • Shoebill Stork • African Green Broadbill • Rare Endemics
Africa's greatest birding nation, condensed into seven extraordinary days with an expert ornithologist guide who knows every call, every habitat, every hiding place.
Why Uganda
Africa's Birding Capital
With over 1,066 recorded species — more than all of North America — Uganda is the undisputed jewel of African birding. In just seven days, you will move through an extraordinary variety of habitats: ancient montane rainforest, vast papyrus swamps, acacia savannah, crater lake shores, and dense equatorial jungle.
Each ecosystem holds its own treasures. In Mabamba Swamp you will kneel in a canoe and watch the prehistoric Shoebill Stork rise from the reeds. In Bwindi you will stand in dripping forest and hear the African Green Broadbill. In Queen Elizabeth, the African Skimmer cuts its signature line across the Kazinga Channel at dusk.
Every day is led by one of Uganda's most experienced ornithologist guides — a local specialist who has spent years learning the calls and habitats of each species. This is serious birding, done beautifully.

Day by Day
7-Day Birding Itinerary
Day 1
Entebbe & Mabamba Swamp — The Shoebill
Your guide meets you at Entebbe International Airport and transfers directly to the legendary Mabamba Swamp on the shores of Lake Victoria. Here, in a narrow papyrus canoe, you will glide through still waters in search of the prehistoric Shoebill Stork — one of the world's most sought-after birds. The afternoon light on its ghostly grey silhouette is unforgettable. Evening transfer to your Entebbe guesthouse.
Day 2
Drive to Kibale Forest — Forest Birding Begins
Depart early for Kibale Forest National Park, stopping at Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary en route. Bigodi is renowned for its astonishing bird diversity — over 200 species in a small area — including the Great Blue Turaco and multiple sunbird species. Arrive at your forest lodge in time for an afternoon birding walk along the forest edge as the light turns golden.
Day 3
Full Day Kibale Forest — Albertine Endemics
A full dawn-to-dusk day in Kibale — one of Africa's most diverse birding forests. Your ornithologist guide leads you through the canopy, identifying species by call with astonishing precision. The afternoon offers optional chimpanzee tracking, where forest birding continues throughout. Evening spotlight birding for nightjars and owls.
Day 4
Queen Elizabeth National Park — Savannah & Wetland Birds
Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park, birding all the way along the Kasese road through open savannah and crater lake country. Afternoon game drive over the Kasenyi Plains brings spectacular open-country species. A boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel at sunset is a world-class birding experience — over 600 species have been recorded in this park alone.
Day 5
Drive to Bwindi — The World Heritage Forest
Journey through the dramatic highlands and tea estates of southwestern Uganda to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth. Arrive in the afternoon for a gentle forest-edge walk. The evening chorus in Bwindi is something birders speak of for years.
Day 6
Full Day Bwindi — Albertine Rift Endemics
This is the most species-rich day of the tour. Bwindi harbours 23 of the 36 Albertine Rift endemic bird species — found nowhere else on Earth. Your ornithologist guide knows the territories of each species and will position you for the best possible sightings. The African Green Broadbill, Grauer's Warbler, and Shelley's Crimsonwing are the jewels of this forest.
Day 7
Return to Entebbe — Birding All the Way
A final dawn birding session in the forest before the long scenic drive back to Entebbe, with strategic stops at known birding hotspots along the route. Your guide tallies the final species count and presents your personalised trip checklist. Evening transfer to Entebbe International Airport or overnight lodge, carrying a life list that has grown considerably.

Birder Voices
What Fellow Birders Say
"I have birded on every continent. Uganda with Wander & Wonder is the finest week of birding I have ever experienced. Our guide could identify 50 species by call alone. The Shoebill on Day 1 set the tone for an extraordinary tour."
"We tallied 687 species in 7 days. That number alone would make the trip special. But it was the African Green Broadbill in Bwindi at dawn — the way our guide positioned us perfectly for the light — that I will carry forever."
"As a first-time Africa birder I was nervous, but the team made everything effortless. The post-tour species report was a beautiful keepsake. Uganda is now permanently on my annual birding calendar."
