Day-by-Day Itinerary

Four days designed to show you the very best of Queen Elizabeth National Park — from sweeping savannah plains to the papyrus-lined shores of the Kazinga Channel.

Day One

Kampala to Queen Elizabeth — The Drive South-West

Your journey begins with an early morning collection from your Kampala hotel or Entebbe Airport. Your guide and private 4x4 safari vehicle head south-west through the lush rolling hills of Uganda’s equatorial heartland. The drive takes approximately five to six hours, passing through the ancient tea estates of Bushenyi and the dramatic crater lake district of western Uganda.

Stop at a viewpoint above Lake Mburo or the Equator monument for photographs and a brief introduction to the ecology you are about to enter. Arrive at your lodge by early afternoon, giving you time to settle in, enjoy lunch on the veranda, and take your first look at the African bushland spreading to the horizon.

As the afternoon heat softens, your guide will lead a short orientation walk or drive to the nearby park boundary — a gentle taster before tomorrow’s full game drive. Watch the sunset paint the Rwenzori Mountains amber over dinner.

Day Two

Morning Game Drive & the Legendary Kazinga Channel Cruise

Rise before dawn. The savannah is at its most alive in the blue hour before sunrise, when lions are still active and elephants move in long, quiet processions toward water. Your open-roof 4x4 rolls out of camp as the sky begins to lighten, setting off into the vast Mweya Peninsula and the Kasenyi plains — Queen Elizabeth’s prime big game country.

Scan the acacia woodland for the resident lion prides. African buffaloes congregate in herds of hundreds. Uganda kob — this country’s national antelope — dot the plains in their thousands. Warthogs, waterbuck, giant forest hogs, and mongoose move through the grass as your guide reads the land like a map.

Return to the lodge for a late brunch, then board a launch boat for the 2-hour Kazinga Channel cruise. This 32-kilometre channel connecting Lakes George and Edward is one of Africa’s greatest wildlife spectacles: over 100 hippos wallow and grunt just metres from the boat, enormous Nile crocodiles bask on the banks, and over 600 bird species use the channel corridor — pelicans, kingfishers, herons, African fish eagles. The birding alone would justify the journey.

Day Three

Ishasha Sector — In Search of Tree-Climbing Lions

Today belongs to one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife phenomena. Pack a full-day picnic and head south to the remote Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park — a two-hour drive through landscapes that grow progressively wilder and less visited.

Ishasha is famous worldwide for its tree-climbing lions: unique prides that have learned to haul themselves into the broad flat branches of ancient fig trees, perhaps for the breeze, perhaps to escape tsetse flies below, perhaps simply because they can. Seeing three or four lions draped across the branches of a fig tree against a blue African sky is a sight that belongs to no nature documentary — it must be witnessed in person.

Beyond the lions, Ishasha offers a completely different mood to the Mweya sector — quieter, more remote, thick with topi antelopes and giant forest hogs. Take a picnic lunch beneath the trees before beginning the drive back north through the Maramagambo Forest corridor, where vervet monkeys and black-and-white colobus move through the canopy above you.

Day Four

Final Morning Drive & Return to Kampala

A final early morning game drive before the day warms up. Luxury guests enjoy a private bush breakfast served in the field as the sun rises over the Rwenzori Range — one of the most memorably beautiful mornings a safari can offer. Morning drives at this hour often yield the most intimate wildlife moments: a lion with a fresh kill, elephants drinking, leopards slinking back toward cover.

Return to the lodge for a full breakfast and check-out by 10am. Your guide loads the vehicle and the drive back to Kampala begins — this time passing through Fort Portal, where there is time for a short stop for crafts and a local coffee or tea. Arrive back in Kampala by early evening, dropped at your hotel or Entebbe Airport with four days of extraordinary memories packed alongside your luggage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often about this safari.

What animals will I see at Queen Elizabeth National Park? +
Queen Elizabeth is Uganda’s most biodiverse national park, home to over 95 mammal species and 600 bird species. Common sightings include African buffalo, elephant, hippo, Uganda kob, warthog, waterbuck, giant forest hog, mongoose, and spotted hyena. Lions are regularly seen, particularly in the Ishasha sector where the famous tree-climbing prides live. Leopards are present but elusive. Chimpanzees inhabit the Kyambura Gorge just inside the park boundary. Crocodile sightings are guaranteed on the Kazinga Channel cruise.
What makes the Kazinga Channel boat cruise special? +
The Kazinga Channel is a 32-kilometre natural waterway connecting Lake George and Lake Edward. It hosts one of the largest concentrations of hippos in Africa — over 100 are visible from the boat on most days. The channel banks are lined with Nile crocodiles, African fish eagles, open-billed storks, pink-backed pelicans, pied kingfishers, and dozens of heron species. Elephants and buffalo regularly come to drink. The cruise takes 2 hours and offers wildlife photography at extremely close range from the comfort of the boat.
Are the tree-climbing lions guaranteed? +
Ishasha’s tree-climbing lions are wild animals and cannot be guaranteed, but sighting rates are high — typically above 80% during day visits. These prides are well-habituated to vehicles and tend to remain in their preferred fig tree groves. Our guides know the territory intimately and work with UWA rangers to locate the prides each morning. On the rare occasion they are not seen on Day 3, we will make every effort to incorporate an additional Ishasha drive on Day 4 morning before departure.
What is the best time of year to visit Queen Elizabeth National Park? +
Queen Elizabeth National Park is a year-round destination. The dry seasons (June–August and December–February) offer the best game viewing as animals concentrate around water sources and vegetation thins. The green seasons (March–May and September–November) bring spectacular birdlife, lush scenery, and fewer tourists. The park is never truly closed or inaccessible. We operate 365 days a year and can advise on the best window for your specific travel preferences.
Can I combine this safari with gorilla trekking or chimpanzee tracking? +
Absolutely — and this is one of the most popular combinations in East Africa. Queen Elizabeth sits between Kibale Forest (chimpanzee tracking, approximately 2 hours north) and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (gorilla trekking, approximately 2 hours south). A combined 8 or 10-day itinerary covering all three is entirely feasible and represents some of the most extraordinary wildlife diversity available anywhere on earth. Contact our team to design your combined itinerary.
Is a hot air balloon safari available over Queen Elizabeth? +
Yes. Hot air balloon safaris over Queen Elizabeth National Park are available as a premium add-on to this tour. The balloon launches at dawn and offers extraordinary aerial views of the savannah, the Kazinga Channel, and the Rwenzori Mountains. This is an unforgettable experience and particularly popular with honeymooners and photography enthusiasts. Please request this at time of booking as availability is strictly limited and must be arranged in advance.
How fit do I need to be for this safari? +
This is a vehicle-based safari and is suitable for all fitness levels. Game drives take place from a comfortable 4x4 safari vehicle. The Kazinga Channel cruise is conducted from a launch boat with seating throughout. Some short walks around lodge grounds or to viewpoints may be included. The Ishasha drive involves long hours in the vehicle over some unpaved tracks, which can be bumpy. Guests with specific mobility or health concerns should inform us when booking and we will tailor the experience accordingly.
